Ta’Naiyah , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
When I first started my business, I relied on my family and friends to support my business but they never fully cooperated. We small business owners explore the role of friends and family in helping us succeed. Throughout my 3 years of business, I’ve learned that strangers will support you more than your own family and friends. They will show up and show out for you. Normally, family and friends asks for discounts but pays the full price for others. That’s totally over the line but always remember to be firm about your business and your prices.

Hi! My name is Ta’Naiyah Jenkins and I am the owner of Pony Tingz! Pony Tingz started the year of 2019 which was my sophomore year of high school. Beauty was always an industry I wanted to join whether it was selling hair extensions or styling hair. Pony Tingz offers hair extensions, mink lashes, hot tools, hair care products and sunglasses. Within Pony Tingz, we have longer lasting hair that can be maintained for 2-3 years with good care! We are known for having good quality products at an affordable price. We also offer shop now, pay later which allows our customers to pay in four installments. What sets us apart from others is our high-quality products, expeditious shipping process, and amazing customer service. As you know, our hair lasts 2-3 years with no tangling or shedding. Furthermore, our strip lashes can be washed and reused without losing their quality. Not only do we offer hair extensions, but we also offer styling hair products such as lace glue, hot tools, brushes, elastic bands, and more! Each order has been shipped or delivered the same day or the next day! We make sure to keep track of each package and verify that it gets to the desired destination. Our customer service responds the same day, within a few minutes or the next hour. I am most proud of the recognition Pony Tingz is receiving as our clientele grows. We ensure our customers are satisfied and are always our top priority.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Pony Tingz started off as a side hustle when I was in the 11th grade. I was working part time at Arby’s at the time and wanted to explore something in my interest. Beauty was always something I loved and the goal was to have multiple incomes at the time. The name “Pony Tingz ” was created in March 2019. During that time, I was getting content created and learning more about the business world. On November 11th, 2019, I launched Pony Tingz and the sales were steady. Then, I learned more about marketing skills which boosted my sales and clientele. In 2021, I decided to add more products such as hot tools, strip lashes, bonnets, and frontal wraps which garnered lots of attention. I was known as the “One Stop Shop.” And still even today, Pony Tingz is still known as that. Some of the key milestones I’ve faced were being a teenager, juggling school, part time employee, and owning a business. Another key milestone I’ve faced was financially managing accounts. When I first started Pony Tingz, I didn’t have separate accounts such as personal or business. Although, that milestone was a part of my learning process about business.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
We keep up with clients by having email marketing, sending them small inspirational quotes, and presales before they display online. In each order, we add thank you cards to show appreciation for supporting! Also, if our customers purchase more than three times, we send them loyalty cards with a discount code. My advice for other business owners is to be welcoming, make your customers feel comfortable with asking certain questions. Put your customer interest first because they are the ones who sells your business throughout the entire world and business industry.
