Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tamryn Liu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tamryn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Consider the moment we decided to leave our corporate jobs. It’s easy to imagine the myriad of concerns that would have surrounded such a decision – the financial implications, the uncertainty of freelancing, the challenges of starting a business. Yet, armed with nothing but old laptops and sheer determination, we dove headfirst into the unknown.
In those initial days, success wasn’t about big paychecks or recognition. It was about securing any online job we could find, be it menial. Every small gig was a step forward, every challenge a learning opportunity. The transition from these small tasks to running a successful agency wasn’t just about skill acquisition or business acumen; it was a testament to our unwavering faith in our journey and the grit to continue, even when the odds seemed stacked against us.
Our story is reminiscent of the old saying, “It’s not about the destination, but the journey.” The path we chose was not straightforward, and it was paved with challenges. Yet, it was this very journey, with all its ups and downs, that shaped our success.
Success, as we’ve gathered from our journey, is an intricate weave of several elements. From our story, here’s what we deduce constitutes the recipe for success:
* Bold Ambition: It’s crucial to have a vision, no matter how lofty. For us, it was the dream of leading a life unbounded by the typical 8-5 grind, a life that merged our professional pursuits with our wanderlust.
* Resilience: Starting from scratch, especially when leaving behind the comfort of a steady job, is never easy. Facing setbacks, rejections, and moments of self-doubt, and then pushing through them, is an essential aspect of the journey to success.
* Continuous Learning: The digital age has democratized learning. Our journey, from scouring online courses to mastering skills via YouTube, underscores the importance of being a perpetual student.
* Adaptability: In a rapidly evolving world, the ability to pivot and adapt is indispensable. We transformed a forced work-from-home situation during a pandemic into an opportunity that eventually set us on our entrepreneurial path.
* Commitment: Whether it was about putting in the hours to learn new skills or ensuring we provided the best services at NxtGen Services, unwavering commitment was a constant.
* Defining Your Own Success: This might be the most crucial lesson from our journey. We redefined success as personal happiness and fulfillment, rather than mere material accumulation.
How Our View Was Developed:
Success isn’t handed down; it’s crafted. It’s sculpted from challenges, failures, learnings, and an indomitable spirit. Success stories aren’t merely about the end result but about the journey, the struggles, the moments of doubt, and the ultimate rise from those adversities. Our tale reinforces the belief that success is subjective and deeply personal. For some, it might be about achieving professional heights, but for us, it’s about redefining life on our terms, finding happiness, and inspiring others along the way.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We are Nic and Tamz, a dynamic duo hailing from the beautiful landscapes of South Africa. While we might seem like your typical young couple, our journey has been anything but ordinary. Bound together by shared dreams and aspirations, we yearned for a life outside the monotony of the 9-5 cycle. We wanted our days to be fueled by passion, creativity, and adventure.
How We Started:
Our journey began within the confines of our corporate 8-5 jobs. Like many, the pandemic thrust us into a work-from-home arrangement. However, this change was more than just a temporary shift for us; it was a revelation. We discovered a newfound love for flexibility and the freedom to structure our day. Our routine corporate life began to feel more like a cage, and the urge to break free grew stronger.
But our escape wasn’t grand or glamorous. Armed with decade-old laptops and a shared dream, we took the bold step of leaving our steady jobs behind. We dived into the unpredictable world of freelancing, grabbing any online task that came our way, be it big or small. Our goal was singular: to have a job that allowed us the liberty to be digital nomads.
Every skill we possess today was painstakingly acquired through countless online courses and hours spent poring over YouTube tutorials. We evolved from novices scraping by, to entrepreneurs running NxtGen Services – a flourishing subscription design and video agency. In merely 9 months, we replaced our combined corporate salaries, paving the way for our dream to travel the world.
Our Services:
At NxtGen, we pour our heart, soul, and all the expertise we’ve garnered into providing top-notch design and video services. Our projects aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re about narrating tales, forging relationships, and breathing life into brands. With each undertaking, we reiterate our commitment to innovation, quality, and client delight.
Living Our Dream:
But NxtGen is just one chapter of our story. Our collective wanderlust has led us to embark on an audacious mission: to explore 100 countries in a mere three years. This journey is not just about checking boxes on a list; it’s about immersing in diverse cultures, absorbing myriad experiences, and understanding the vast tapestry of human existence.
Our Message To You:
Our story might sound extraordinary, but at its core, it’s a message of hope and empowerment. We want you to know that if two individuals, with dated tech and limited initial know-how, can transform their lives in under a year, so can you. It’s all about taking that daring first step towards your dream.
We invite you to be part of our journey – either through the transformative services at NxtGen or by sharing in the tales and insights from our global escapades. We promise it’ll be an experience unlike any other.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For us, the most rewarding aspect of being creatives lies in the intricate dance between understanding a client’s vision and interweaving our personal touch into every creation. The journey is undeniably stressful; deciphering a client’s desires while staying true to our creative instincts often feels like walking a tightrope. However, the magic unfolds when our work resonates with a client, and they see their dreams brought to life with our unique flair. To date, we’re grateful that no client has ever been displeased with our initial drafts. While tweaks and adjustments are an inherent part of the creative process, seeing a client ecstatically embrace our work is profoundly gratifying. It fills us with immense pride, affirming our dedication and passion for the designs and videos we craft.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Our entrepreneurial mindset and management style have been profoundly influenced by several resources. Chief among them are Alex Hormozi’s books “100 Million Offer” and “100 Million Leads.” These works provided us with invaluable insights into scaling and lead generation, offering actionable steps and strategies that have been instrumental in our journey.
Additionally, YouTube has been a treasure trove of inspiration. Watching success stories of various entrepreneurs and startups has not only broadened our perspective but also fueled our determination. Seeing others surmount challenges and achieve their dreams instills a powerful belief in us that we, too, can chart a similar path to success. The blend of theoretical knowledge from books and the real-world experiences showcased in videos has significantly shaped our entrepreneurial thinking and management philosophy.
