Tamra, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The name of the company was created because we wanted to pay homage to our DMV roots! The W in That SaWce represents Washington D.C. Being a DMV native all my life, I wanted to be able to take a little piece of home no matter where I am in the world. Mumbo sauce has been the staple condiment of the DMV area for years, and we wanted to create a product that puts our twist on the original.

Tamra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the packaged food business out of pure curiosity! In the midst of the pandemic just like most people I had a lot of spare time on my hands. During that time, I experimented with a lot of random ideas/recipes in the kitchen that I’ve never tried before. One of them was mumbo sauce. I found a recipe for mumbo sauce that I then tweaked to my flavor preference & the rest is history! Once I realized I had this groundbreaking recipe, I began testing our SaWce with family and friends, which received so much great feedback that we decided to bottle it up! Starting out online with Etsy early 2021, we began to slowly grow our brand. Building a presence on social media as well. We’ve now expanded to having our own site where customers can buy direct from us. We currently offer 2 flavors of our specialty SaWce: Original and Millionaire Mango with hopes to expand with a variety of flavors in the near future.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to learn so far is that support is never automatic. Each customer, sale and interaction is earned. You can be a great person, have great products & plenty of other things yet no one is obligated to support you or your business. Starting my business from the ground up (and still continuously building!) I’ve had to come to that realization plenty of times. Changing my mindset on fixating over who isn’t currently supporting me has allowed me to put more energy into my active supporters!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Our most effective strategy for growing clientele has definitely been word of mouth interactions. Our awesome customers share their experience they’ve had with us & tell their family & friends. We’ve been blessed to have a lot of our referrals become repeat customers. We also love to drop off our QR codes in random places for new people to connect with us & learn more about our brand!
