We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamra Coviello a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamra, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
This is a great question. It was a culmination of my many different philosophies of design and marketing. The color black has always been my signature. It is the accent in the room. The exclamation point in the space. Black is a timeless and modern color.
Originally, I envisioned a simple modern 3-panel black door as part of my logo. Because I am a visual person. I wanted my firm’s name to evoke a visual experience. A black door definitely makes a statement. It is classic and powerful. Plus, a grand door represents luxury and hospitality. During the evolution of the branding of my firm, I decided two things I did not want it to be two words and I did not want my logo to be literal.
Lastly, I read that it is important for interior designers to have their name in their firm’s name. It is great for recognition and referral basis. People will remember your name before they remember some creative business name.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I became a professional designer when I was scouted by a large flooring store in San Diego. I always had a passion for interior design and had done many of my own projects for years. However, once I stepped into the construction industry through flooring I quickly realized my talents were desired by the public. I became their Showroom manager quickly and loved designing for clients.
It was in 2018 when I recognized my skills as a color specialist and decorator would be better suited if I broke away and started my own interior design firm.
My firm grew swiftly and my personal principles became the pillars of my firm. I am vegan and committed to sustainable design. Many of my clients do not live a vegan lifestyle, however, they appreciate my mindful selection of products in their homes that provide eco-friendly and minimal air pollution in their homes.
I am proud of the pillars my business stands on and every year I am striving to partner with ethical manufacturers to support my design philosophy.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As I have navigated through the interior design industry as a vegan design business I noticed the void in the industry of luxury vegan products. For the past year, I have been in the research and development stage of creating my own Vegan Lifestyle brand of linens and wallpaper. It is invigorating but challenging due to finding the right companies to partner with and align with my principles.
I am getting closer to my dream of providing vegan and sustainable products to my clients and the public. I cannot wait to make an announcement hopefully in early 2024.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Resources for my type of interior design are limited and I am determined to be the resource to many vegan designers in the future.
