We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tammy Cameron. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tammy below.
Tammy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
My client approached me after losing a 50 pounds. In addition, the single mom of four, transitioned into retirement and needed assistance dressing for her new physique and change in lifestyle. I began by helping her clean out her closet, which had clothes in it that were from the last 20 years no longer suited her needs, were out of style, nor fit. We kept sentimental items and anything she would wear again.
Her request was to build an interchangeable wardrobe that was “grab and go”. After doing a color and body analysis, I began shopping for the clothes that would work best for her. In several weeks, I presented her with a budget conscious, new wardrobe. To ensure everything was interchangeable, each item had to go with 3 different looks and with her input, the wardrobe I presented relied on 3 colors.
In our last session, she tried on everything and then selected the items she liked and was most confident in. After down-selecting her choices, I made sure everything could be used in at least 3 different looks. Finally, I followed up with pictures of outfit suggestions from what she purchased to refer to.
Tammy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my professional career working for Colorado’s US Senator as a policy advisor. After 10 years, I moved into the private sector, advising and representing Fortune 20 clients and nationally recognized non-profits before Congress. After 25 years in DC, I moved back to my home state of Colorado to start my next chapter.
Over my career, I learned that personal presentation is critical whether it be giving advice to a CEO or advocating with staff members, or just running errands. During Covid, I was able to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology’s program for Image Consulting, something I’ve discovered I’m passionate about and a field where I can utilize my professional career, just in a different way.
I love that I can improve someone’s confidence, be it for an interview or special occasion, just by helping them look their best when dressing. My philosophy is clothing should work for you, you shouldn’t be working for it. I post a weekly blog on fashion-related advice and produce my own content on social media. What drives me most is that dressing should be affordable and stress-free.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is very dynamic, which makes it intimidating to me. I have stretched myself such that I now do reels and interactions for my company Elevated Image–something really difficult for me to achieve. Your growth needs to be organic, even though the social media booster programs out there can help, they can backfire by identifying accounts as fake. When you need help, hire someone with the necessary expertise that represents your brand and ideals.
The best advice I can give is to keep creating videos until you feel confident. Once you’ve done enough of them, you will be comfortable enough to allow your personality to shine through and appear genuine.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
After launching Elevated Image, I did a wardrobe overhaul for a client. She subsequently provided me a forum to present my services, using her as an example. She’s a personal trainer, and shortly thereafter she appeared on a local tv station to discuss her fitness and health expo and asked me to dress her for that too, which was great exposure for me.
When responding to her praise about how I changed her look and made her “more professional” I discounted my impact in two interactions with her and others. Subsequently, I learned that regardless of how long you’ve been carrying out your business, do not diminish the impact you can have on others, even it you’re starting something new. Remain confident!
