We recently connected with Tammira Lucas and have shared our conversation below.
Tammira, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think ensuring you take care of yourself first is the key to success. If you aren’t good to yourself you can’t serve your audience in the magnitude you need to serve them in.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The Cube Cowork started as an idea that I had after helping over 100 moms in Baltimore launch businesses through my nonprofit organization, Moms As Entrepreneurs. I wanted to innovate coworking for moms while assisting them in creating generational wealth. The Cube Cowork provides onsite babysitting services within our coworking space so that moms can focus on building their empires and creating generational wealth without daily motherhood demands. We are their home away from home with their nanny.
I knew the only way for me to help create generational wealth was to be an example for those moms. I called my sister and asked her whether she believed in me, and she said yes. I then told her the idea I had, and we started the process of launching The Cube Cowork. The Cube Cowork was bootstrapped, and we started in a 12oo square foot building in Baltimore County. Today we are over 15,000 square feet and have become the largest black women-owned coworking space in the United States.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Launching The Cube Cowork was no easy feat. In fact, my sister (TeKesha Jamison) and I pooled together our financial resources to launch. An opportunity to make a significant investment in our business presented itself to us. It’s funny because we were both hesitant to take this opportunity. Needless to say, we didn’t go with our gut and spent more time and resources attempting to satisfy the needs of the investment requirements for the investor to ghost us and not give us the financial investment. This opportunity almost cost us our entire business. But because we are two educated HBCU grads from Baltimore City, resilience is in our blood. We went back to the drawing board and made it through that rough time. After 6 years, we are still standing strong.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistency has helped us build our reputation. We know it’s important to be consistent in our brand. Whatever we do we try to ensure that it’s aligned with our brand. We don’t break processes for people, which allows us to grow in many different ways.
