Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tamira Luc. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Tamira thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
What’s in a name?
Well…the name of our company, Delucslife, although obvious to me, started way back before I even thought of the company.
My belief which comes from what I saw my parents create is that women and men are vital for raising children. My mother thought the same thing. So she created a home based business , which happened to be a hair salon, so that she could work at home and still be there when we came in from school. It was brilliant. I think I would be a different person if she hadn’t done that. When she got remarried, she encouraged my dad to start his own business. My life would be completely different without having a father figure in the home and seeing my parents work together. This became the standard for me. This I call the Family Farm. I wanted to create my own farm. Let me explain.
Back in the day, families would have a farm where the mom, dad and kids all worked together taking care of the daily duties. It’s old school. But it worked. I wanted to have what my parents had so I looked for a partner that I could work with on the family farm. I found Mr. Luc.
The name of our business, represents how we flow together in life and business. It is the Luc’s life…luxurious life or just Delucslife.
So what’s in a name? I’d say a lot.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My business is a combination of a passion and a talent. My passion is writing. I am not that good at writing however, I love playing with words. The talent is ideas. I have a never ending pool of ideas. I was trying to figure out what I could do with this talent, and it finally led me into a marketing degree. . At first I ended up in operations (which was helpful) but not as fulfilling. Some people don’t go to school for the thing they ultimately work in but now I coach people in business and marketing. What a blessing.
I have created a series of international bestselling books in the entrepreneurship and marketing space called “Women Who BossUp” which highlights women in many different disciplines sharing their story and road to success.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
You can’t pick the test that you will be given in life, or the lessons that you have to learn so I will share one of my biggest lessons in life. It ultimately led to my purpose.
In the early 2000s I started in real estate, first in marketing and later in operations. Around the corporate job, I was side hustling as a real estate investor, marketing agency, and property manager. By 2008 I had lost my whole portfolio. I lost my marriage, my home, my job and my confidence. It’s amazing how well I was doing and how quickly everything changed. It took me years to mentally recover from it. I could not believe that everything that I had built was gone. I blamed everyone around me for the loss including my boss, my husband, the government, the interest rates, the mortgage lenders, everything. And I also couldn’t get over the fact that I had let so many people down.
It was all in my head. No one was paying attention to me or what I was going through. People were in their own situation and did not care about my situation. And it was no one else’s fault but my own. And I had to learn to take full responsibility for my life and business. I did and finally got back on my feet. I have had more tests in life and when it gets challenging… I just BossUp. That is what it is all about. Get up and BossUp.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
It is not my experience that women easily get money to finance their business. Especially African-American women. So I didn’t look for any. I just bootstrapped and learned as I went. After many years in business, I finally got an SBA loan. That’s about it. I fully financed my business until about five years into it.
