We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamill Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tamill, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
As a nonprofit consulting and government relations firm, The Harris Strategy Group is committed to serving grassroots leaders and organizations that help underserved, marginalized, and underfunded communities. We provide strategic planning, program development and evaluation along with direct lobbying and advocacy for organizations and individuals who are striving to establish equity, equality, and justice in communities that often see inequities and disparities.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always wanted to help support marginalized communities. As an African American woman, understanding the wealth gap, economic disparities and lack of resources that my community has withstood for so long, my desire was to become an advocate to help dismantle inequities, disparities, and discrimination that we face. The work that I do helps me to connect with and serve grassroots organizations that are on the frontlines to establish some semblance of equality, justice, and equity that we deserve. My job is to serve as an advocate and help bring community and economic, educational, health, justice.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I’ve had to learn is to know that I belong here in this space just as much as anyone else. I’ve accepted that I have paid my dues and will continue to work diligently to build my brand, my reputation, and raise awareness for the causes that I support, but I am here and deserve to be the thoughtleader that I am.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Based on the world’s standards and my experience, I’m a successful Black woman. However, in the roles and jobs I previously held, I never felt fulfilled until I began to do the work that I’m doing now. I had to sacrifice and pivot in a major way. I started a PhD program in Political Science, became a professor and have been working in my business full-time. I’ve never felt more fulfilled in my work before and to know that I’m leading a firm that is making an impact in the lives of the underserved and underinvested is what I call success.
