Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tamilee Webb. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tamilee, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
Back in the 1980’s aerobic dance studios were just getting started. I was in college and loved to dance and be active so I got a job at the first Aerobic Dance Studio in town. That was my start to Group exercise. I went on to lead large group classes at Chico State University, Chico where I was working on my Master’s degree in Exercise science.
My opportunity to do the BUNS OF STEEL video came through a company that I was signed with as a spokesperson SPRI PRODUCTS, which is still in business today. The president at the time of SPRI knew the producer of the video and recommended me. This was in 1989.
I was to only do one video, but after it hit #1 on the billboard, I ended up doing 22 titles in all and sold over 10,000 million copies.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Fitness celebrity, globally known for transforming millions of women’s bodies and their self-esteem through the popular BUNS OF STEEL Video series, along with award-winning products, and motivational speaking.
My passion for health and fitness has allowed me to produce numerous books, videos, DVDs, and equipment to promote a healthy living lifestyle.
My inspiration comes from those that have experienced the results of following my programs and the change it has created in their lives. I help people feel better physically through good nutrition, exercise, and mental wellness.
In 2018 I launched WEBBWORKOUTS.COM a monthly subscription where you can design your own workout you want. Each month new workouts are added where you can choose the length of time and the body part. It also includes healthy recipes, tips, and challenges. It’s where you can access all my BUNS & ABS OF STEEL video series.
In addition to my online streaming site,WEBBWORKOUTS.COM, I offer online personal coaching. Those that want a personal program and one-on-one care can sign up for monthly or eight-week sessions with me.
Because I love helping people in person, I keep a limited amount of in-person clients that I train at my in-home studio. Both men and women train for either, overall health, strength, mobility, and balance with me.
I encourage my clients to have goals of what they want to look and feel instead of a number; such as a weight loss goal, We are chasing a look & feel, not a number!
As a consumer looking for health & fitness professionals, I suggest you do your homework by researching the trainer’s credentials and reputation, then interviewing them to see if you are a fit. It’s the same with trainers, if I don’t feel the energy and get the answers to questions I’ll ask, I’ll suggest another trainer. There are plenty of trainers but not all trainers are qualified. Referrals are my go-to.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
You can have many certificates, degrees, and years of experience, but being personal and listening to the client’s needs is crucial to succeeding. Providing them with their program, not a cookie-cutter program that will get them results, keeps them returning.
When your clients are seeing results, things are easy; however, if they are not getting the results they wanted as quickly as they want, it’s essential to have open communication to explain and educate how and what is going on that is holding back and being honest!
Because of the results, millions got with my workout videos and explaining why and how the workout will help them, they came to trust me. A woman said, “Whatever Tamilee puts her name on, I’ll trust her to invest in it.” That is a huge compliment.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Marketing back in the early nineties was different than today’s marketing. It used to be a marketing team setting up interviews via media, newspapers, radio, and in-store because social media as we know it today was not available. It’s a foundation of people coming together that connects all the dots to bring the product to awareness.
The bottom line is the success of the product. When a person loves a product/person, they will share it—Word-of-mouth is the best marketing, in my opinion. Anyone using my workouts got results so much they wanted to share it with others, and it snowballed.
However, today you, as a single person, can use social media to market your brand, but it’s still the same. It goes with sharing the post with others that gets it noticed. If the product reaches consumer results, it will be shared and prosperous.
