We were lucky to catch up with Tamika Watson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tamika , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I suffer from Ptsd, anxiety, and depression which caused me to have horrible self esteem. Once I learned to love myself I wanted to create a line that would show the world that I loved myself and wanted to make that love I had developed for myself a whole worldwide movement. That is also what sets us aside from other brands. We use fashion as an outlet…as a way of showing the world that despite anything we have been through…we are constantly “Loving the HER that is You!”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Her Love Clothing LLC is not only an urban clothing line but a movement. A movement to instill the empowerment of women and the love of self. A movement to let everyone know that we (women) are queens and should have the right to demand to be treated as such. Our motto is “Loving the HER that is You.” During Her Love’s six years, the brand had been seen all over the world. From fashion shows to magazine articles & various web series. The brand has so developed a program called Project Her Love that uses modeling as a self-esteem booster for young girls. The creator, Tamika Watson says this about the creation of Her Love. “I’ve always had a love for fashion. It was one of the ways I dealt with my self-esteem. I would constantly tell myself that I may be fat and ugly, but I can dress. That mixed with my diagnosis of ptsd and depression played a major part in how I once thought of myself. I had a special person in my life at the time who had self-esteem that was out of this world. I admired the love she had for herself and longed for it. As I begin to explore different ways to express those desires, the obvious choice was through clothing.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I manufacture my own products in the beginning. My and my Cricut & Embroidery machine worked overtime but as my brand became more wildly known, I began to look into vendors to manufacture my items for me. It has been a won/lose situation that I don’t think anyone has completely mastered. One thing I have definitely learned is it takes money to make money. You are definitely going to have to spend money on samples from vendors to find who has the best quality. And always build solid relationships with at least 2/3 vendors.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for new clients is of course social media, especially Instagram. But also for me personally, it’s being involved in fashion shows all over the country.
