We were lucky to catch up with Tamika Phillips recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tamika, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
The first dollar of revenue I made from a client that wasn’t a relative or someone I was familiar with came from taking a chance advertising on Groupon. I was skeptical at first because at that time Groupon took 50% of your service cost. I was just starting out and needed to get the customers in the door so I chose Groupon. Although I no longer use Groupon they have helped me build the clientele I have now,

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
BellaMe Wax & Lash Studio came into fruition after I was laid off in 2013. The toughest yet the best decision I made was deciding to follow my passion and dreams instead of going back to Corporate America. It was not easy building a brand and getting customers through our doors yet I stayed positive and continued to market, attend networking events, and most importantly provide excellent service to everyone that walked through the doors. Slowly but surely clients started coming to our studio, the reviews started coming in and customers were referring their friends and family. The greatest lesson I have learned is to never get comfortable. I was comfortable in Corporate America and never saw the layoff coming. It was beyond my control and it had nothing to do with my abilities or performance. At my studio we never get comfortable. Every client new and old are treated as though it’s their first time coming to the studio. The beauty industry is always evolving therefore we are always in constant search for new services and products that help our “Bellas”and “Beaus” look and feel their best.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I would have to say client referrals. The mom groups in my area keep my name circulating during Bunco night and I can’t thank them enough.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Excellent customer service, Excellent customer service, Excellent Customer Service!!!! I have a favorite Sushi spot that I frequent and the reason I choose them above any other is because of Allen my favorite waiter who knows my name and my order. My clients are like family and I remember details about them that many would find miniscule. My goal is that every one of my clients feel valued.
