We recently connected with Tamika Carlton and have shared our conversation below.
Tamika , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Relationships fuel us. I’ve always known it, but when I got into my fruitful and challenging relationship that made space for my growth, I looked into the data because I was interested. Data shows the impact of relationships on our lives. With only 14% of people in the U.S. that feel very happy, I knew that stat needed to change, and I would be the one, along with my husband, Logan, to build the momentum to do so through a relationship platform. As we experienced our struggles at times, we noticed there was not a one-stop location for all things relationships and, most importantly, an inclusive environment to connect and relate because the reality is we are all more alike than different. Whether it be relationship resources, advice, couples events, or couples retreats, the world was lacking a place for transparency to occur, for growth, for fun, and for experiences to broaden horizons. It became a passion project for us to provide the goods to showcase how much love can increase understanding. How resources created out of love are valuable and connecting to those that may not be like you is exactly what we need to flourish as a society. So here we are. Focused on sharing the love and being the vessel for great experiences to occur and friendships to morph into business partnerships, family connections, and non-limiting conversations. Through Couples Experience, Logan and I curate inclusive luxury couples events and couples retreats. We provide the exact space we were looking for, and we share our mantra, Love Makes The Experience™. The rest is the future!
Tamika , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a Marketing Consultant, SEO and Communications Expert, Relationship Coach, and Avid Traveler. I like to call myself a loving introverted extrovert that loves to help businesses increase their revenue and connect people to their best lives. When I’m not working or sharing the love or getting couples to reach new heights, you can find me sipping kombucha, DJing, and indulging in my favorite Cold Brew or Texas Sheet Cake vegan ice cream. I created Couples Experience (CE) in 2018. It is the only inclusive relationship company. We curate luxury couples retreats, couples events and provide relationship advice and resources. The CE Circle is an added bonus of Couples Experience and was created as an outlet to feature couples and experts. Whether you are happily single, LGBTQIA+, searching for your love, wildly in love with your partner, married, feeling pleasure in your partnership, divorced, or completely lost in the sauce of what to do in love and relationships, we know your story matters. Your story is unique to your experiences, and the CE Circle appreciates only what you offer.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Sure. I thought you could do things alone for so long, but that is false. As an only child, it has been easy for me to do things individually and always depend on myself, and up to a couple of years ago, that worked for me. I learned quite quickly that we are in an age of assistance. An era where having real examples to help stretch you past your comfort zone is a need. Investing in yourself and investing time and money into having a mentor or a business coach that you identify with and that is great at what they do will be the best investment you could ever make for yourself. It was for me. I connected with Rachel Rodgers a couple of years ago and joined her Club soon after. The mindset shifts and revenue growth that came from seeing an example of where I wanted to be were a significant piece of my success for sure. It helped to magnify my vision and to take action. So, friends, I am saying to you, do not do things alone. Look to get advisement. It could be the exact growth you need to transcend your business.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My husband is my business partner. We met when I was pretty fed up with dating. I cannot tell you how dramatic and annoying my dating chronicles were before him. Those who know how chill I am are surprised to hear the craziness I have endured. Because of my previous experiences, the day Logan and I met, I was not interested in looking. Dating. Or a relationship, but my soul was. One July afternoon at a day party in Chicago, I had no plans for our conversation to progress as it did, but I am happy it happened. The serendipitous nature of our meeting was all a part of the universe’s plan. Our first date lasted 8 hours, and within a month, we were exclusive. Within eight months, we were engaged, and a year after, we were married. That same year we started Couples Experience after having our own experiential travel engagements. We observed other couples. We went through our challenges as a couple going through things so quickly but so invested. We had many conversations about what was lacking in the world of love and relationships and how our business, Couples Experience, would be the solution. We made it happen, and now here we are, creating a movement of love filled with transparency, experiences, resources, and inclusivity. Next up? The relaunch of the Couples Experience Magazine, so stay tuned!!
