We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamica Lloyd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tamica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
A defining moment that caused me to change my health happened 14 years ago. I was a young wife and mother that weighed over 220 pounds (at 5’4″ that wasn’t a good weight to be.) I tried every fast fad diet there was and at first, they worked but slowly the weight, cravings, and disappointment would come back with a vengeance. I went in for my yearly check-up and was told I had Type 2 Diabetes. When asked if there was a way I could reverse it without medications I was told, “No you cannot reverse it. Unfortunately, you will be on meds all of your life. You will need more of it as time goes on and you will die from a diabetic condition.” I was devastated. I wasn’t a stranger to diabetes. Plenty of people in my family had that condition and I didn’t want to end up like that.
After much crying and praying, I came across a book that would change my life. It was The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Thomas M. Campbell. The book talked about how you can change your health with food without being hungry. I was skeptical at first, but I read it cover to cover and started to implement what I read. I gave up most meat (I still ate seafood), and dairy, and loaded up on greens. I ate 2 salads a day and steamed veggies and a variety of beans. The weight began to fall off and I wasn’t hungry. What!!! The more clean my eating became (no processed food), the more my a1c numbers improved. I felt good and energized. I was tired and achy all the time it became my norm and had forgotten how it felt to feel good.
This prompted me to help other women change as well and I never looked back.
This lesson taught me so many things about life. I knew within my core there was a better way. I had to slow down, trust myself and go with my gut. Go within. I had to stop listening to the noise around what diet is best and concentrate on just eating food. Not food-like substances. I had to stop listening to the latest gurus (and everyone else) and start listening to my body. I had to take time out for my entire being (body, mind, and soul). The confidence I gained by changing my health is immeasurable.
In the USA we are getting sicker and sicker every year. We are addicted to takeout, sugar, and caffeine all in the name of convenience. We tell ourselves we are too busy to sit still and just be. We are slowly killing ourselves with processed foods that are void of anything nutritious. We even have a sick care system instead of a healthcare system. I was guilty of this until I got that diagnosis. I am grateful for the doctor and his crude words. If he was nicer about my situation I probably wouldn’t have seen it as urgent to change. The good news is it’s not too late for you.
If you are tired of the yo-yo dieting, tired of running, tired of being tired there is a way out. Your body has an innate power to heal when you flood it with the right nutrients.
Is it easy? No.
Will some people think you are crazy? Yes.
Do you have to slow down and put in the work? Yes.
Can you do it? Yes!
Is it worth it? Yes!
Are you work it? Yes

Coach Tamica is a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach with a Master’s Degree in Health Communication who is passionate about health, fitness, nutrition, and happiness.
Her journey began over a decade ago when she realized her health was in danger. She tipped the scale at over 220 pounds and always felt tired. When she was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes her doctor told her that things would only get progressively worse and there was no cure. That prediction wasn’t good enough for her. She started to read everything she could about food and how it affects the body. Everything she read alluded to the fact that eating the wrong foods causes Type 2 Diabetes and eating the right foods MAY be able to reverse it. “Could it be that simple?” she thought. Well after completely changing her diet and lifestyle she discovered in a sense that it was that simple. This realization was put to the test and after dropping over 70 pounds her A1C went from 10.4 to 4.8 in 6 months. From that point on her mission has been to help other women living with this debilitating disease.
