We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tami Magaro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tami, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on and continue to work on is my podcast The Inner World of Filmmaking. I have always been inquisitive and had a love for films, so should be no surprise that I moved into the world of podcasting and interviewing people within the field of filmmaking.
In November of 2021, I purchased the Rode Podcaster Pro, with the intention of producing other people’s podcasts and wanted to practice using it. I reached out to a fellow filmmaker friend Aiden Keltner and asked if I could interview him for a podcast, not sure why I said that since I did not have a podcast. He said yes and wanted to promote his upcoming film Amazing Grace which he was in the process of fundraising. He asked when it would air and if it could be posted in December, I, of course, replied with yes. I recorded my first podcast on November 11, 2021, and have had a weekly show ever since.
This podcast has expanded from my filmmaking friends to guests all over the world. I have met so many wonderful people doing amazing things. I never would have imagined, this podcast would lead me to job opportunities, meeting extraordinary people, and new friendships.

Tami, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
From a tender age, my fascination with the enchanting world of cinema ignited a burning desire within me to be a part of it. As a child, I dreamt of gracing the silver screen as an actress. Yet, my innate shyness restrained me from pursuing that dream, setting me on a unique path that would ultimately lead to an enduring love for filmmaking.
In 1996, I embarked on a new chapter when I relocated to Berkeley, California. It was there, the following year, that I discovered my true calling while working at a community television station in Pacifica. It was within the confines of this station that I first laid hands on the intricacies of editing. This transformative experience saw me editing various shows, actively participating in productions, and notably, creating and producing my very own surfing show, aptly titled “Explorin’ the Stoke.” This venture marked a significant milestone in my burgeoning career, affirming my passion for storytelling through the medium of film.
My journey led me to the vibrant hub of cinematic arts, Los Angeles, in November 2001, where I seized the opportunity to contribute my editing expertise to a feature film project. Despite LA’s cinematic allure, I eventually returned to San Diego, where I found myself channeling my talents into television production within the mental health industry. My extensive experiences have provided me with a multifaceted perspective of the filmmaking process, nurturing a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling and its visual manifestation.
In my creative journey, I have donned various hats, venturing into writing, directing, and editing, culminating in the successful creation of four short films. These endeavors served as both a testament to my unwavering dedication and a reflection of my innate storytelling prowess.
Presently, I find myself immersed in the dynamic world of filmmaking, where I actively contribute to film sets, harness my editing prowess to shape narratives and engage in the creation of impactful Public Service Announcements (PSAs). Concurrently, I helm my podcast, “The Inner World of Filmmaking,” providing an insightful platform that explores the intricate layers of the cinematic universe, while also connecting with like-minded individuals who share my passion for storytelling.
As I continue to navigate this exhilarating journey, my heart remains steadfast in the world of film editing, where I find both solace and boundless creative expression. With each project I undertake, I aspire to craft compelling stories that resonate deeply with audiences, embodying the essence of my enduring love for the art of filmmaking.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel that society can best support artists and creatives by promoting their work in-person events and on social media, by liking posts as well as subscribing or following their channel to show support. It’s important to give people a boost since creating videos takes time, creativity, and consistency. I admire the creativity on social media and doing things that are unique and innovative!
