We were lucky to catch up with Tameika Roames recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tameika , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our mission is to get people to reconnect with each other and with nature in a comfortable and easy way. This company was started honestly because of my military background. Coming from the Army, we did a lot of “forced camping”. Sleeping on the ground, without creature comforts and just making it work. The upside was that we were always outside getting fresh air, enjoying the sun, and receiving the benefits of nature. The other side as to why this company came into being is coming from working in Corporate. Everyone always has a million things on their plate and honestly, it takes energy and effort to slow down. I know that sounds weird but think about it, if you want to go camping, you need the equipment, the time to set up the equipment, and know of a good camping site. My company takes most of the stress out of reconnecting with nature. We make it so that you can do it in your backyard if you want or we find a location for you and bring everything out set it up, and take it down while you get to enjoy nature and friends. Overall, my mission is to get people back outside and get them creating and sharing memories with each other again.
Tameika , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My husband and I both worked in the corporate world at an IT company and decided to leave. We were depressed, and unhappy, and missed being able to be outside more often. So I did some deep diving into the internet and found mobile glamping. Mobile Glamping is bringing glamping tents and furnishings to the customer. We provide most of the creature comforts such as beds, linens, chairs, lights, rugs, and pillows; set up and break down at the location the customer chooses.
We take the stress and frustration out of camping. If you don’t have the time to set up and break down the equipment, we do it for you. Camping or Glamping equipment is pretty expensive so unless you’re an avid camper, you’re probably going to use the equipment once or twice and that’s it. With us, there is no need to own unnecessary equipment, when you can rent it out.
This is our second year in business and what I am mostly proud of are the stories we receive after people have Glamped with us. Some are first-time campers or glampers and they didn’t realize how much they would enjoy it. Others tell us how much time they spent just talking and reconnecting with friends, family or themselves. So it actually makes me very happy when customers say we didn’t get to take as many pictures as we wanted to because we were having so much fun!
We also want people to know how important it is to have a minimal footprint which is why we enjoy doing mobile glamping. We use solar-powered lights, for most of the lighting or battery operated. Believe it or not, we do believe in being minimalistic in our setups. Sometimes, depending on the event, we may provide some extra decor, but we really only provide the necessary items you would need to be comfortable. Humans, really don’t need as much as we have led ourselves to believe to be comfortable outside. A good bed, some amazing sheets, shelter, and the sound of rain or a nice breeze, will have you sleeping like a baby in mere minutes.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Growing our audience has been interesting. We realized quickly that social media changes constantly and sometimes what you did last month, does not equate to what you need to do today to keep growing. We not only share about the Glamping setups we do, but we also share reasons why you should glamp, or Glamping jokes, or other aspects of our lives like our dogs and eating pizza after each setup.
Those who are just starting out, people want to feel like they know you and connect with you. They want to feel like they are a part of your journey in some way. So share your story, share the cleaning days, the breakdown days, the whoopsy times. Let people see that there is a real person behind the service or product,
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Some of the books that helped us curate our service as well as manage our business are Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. He helped us understand that to be successful in your business as an entrepreneur is not all about putting the money back into the company, but being able to pay yourself, even if it’s just a small amount. This philosophy has really helped us understand the flow of money into and out of our business.
Another book is The Art of Gathering: How we meet and why it matters by Priya Parker. Being able to find the intention in bringing people together is interesting and understanding why we need to have more gatherings helps me understand what is important when providing our services.
Finally, I did a cohort called Bunker Labs and it was great because it brought a ton of veteran entrepreneurs together to discuss issues they were facing and sharing wins and challenges with other like-minded individuals.
