We recently connected with TamCTown and have shared our conversation below.
TamCTown , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents definitely laid the first foot stones during my artistic journey. Both of my parents are strong-willed hard workers. I remember watching them work multiple jobs throughout my life. My mom is a competitive dedicated introvert. I learned the importance of giving your best upfront and dedicating time to your craft from her. She is definitely big on first impressions. On the other hand, my dad is a driven compassionate extrovert. I learned to treat people how I desire to be treated and forgiveness from him. He is big on enjoying life and spending it with people who love and support you because life is hard alone. They have both given me reasons to be kind, diligent, and dream big. They are my biggest supporters as a creative.
TamCTown , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
TamCTown, your creative muse. At a young age of 7, I remember winning an art contest sponsored by McDonald’s for Black History Month. I drew a picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. Immediately, I became the future artist in my elementary school. I drew pictures for my teachers and even a book cover for my favorite book that stayed in the library until I left for middle school. Voted Most Likely to Succeed at my 6th grade promotion. I accepted that I was talented. Throughout my middle and high school years, I continued to be the artist at my schools. It was not until high school after a sudden death of a close friend that I realized the power of Art in my life. My A.P. Art teacher showed me how to express myself and eventually heal through art making. Today, I still embrace the young artist in me. She reminds me that art is free, personal and healing. TamCTown offers unique canvases, photography and creative consulting from event planning to art integration courses. As an advocate for Art, I believe children need to explore creativity throughout their education. Art is the pinnacle of communication.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can best support artists and other creative minds by changing the narrative that creatives are not essential. Creativity is a 21st century skill that nurtures exploration, problem-solving, and risk taking. By isolating creativity, we remove a key component in learning, discovery. Creatives or inventors are necessary in all aspects of life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Art education is the goal or mission driving my creative journey. I aspire to create a place for students to cultivate their individual talents while learning academic content through interdisciplinary learning.
