Tambra , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Radio and television is all about taking risks. I initially went to college for Business Management and Marketing. I graduated and earned my MBA degree just to go back to school because I knew I wanted more. I was always unsure if I wanted to be in corporate America. I disliked dressing up for business classes. I didn’t like having to wear business suits and business attire. I remember interning while in college at a very professional corporate organization in Omaha, Nebraska. I loved the opportunity but I remember finishing the work very fast. I would then use the extra time to look up entertainment news and listen to music. I would read entertainment related articles to past time. I knew when I returned from that internship, my heart was somewhere else. I loved people. I loved music. I loved entertainment. I used to host high school parties when I was in high school. Where was that life? I interned at a radio station and I started hosting a local television program where I interviewed artists, while covering events and going to clubs and restaurants in the city and surrounding areas. I immediately fell in love. I realized I loved helping people. I loved talking to people, not just artists but complete strangers. I realized I loved sitting in the studio behind a microphone talking to thousands of people at one time. But this is not what I went to school for? I was offered a job making 60,000 after graduation. I was getting paid nothing at the radio internship I loved so much. I turned that job offer down. I told myself that I had never made 60,000 before, so I should not miss anything that I have never had. I continued to follow my passion and I was in love with what I was doing. I remembered the words my grandfather use to say all the time, ‘If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” I loved what I was doing. I was prayerful that the money would follow. But importantly, I was creating purpose and building a brand.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The biggest reward is being in a position to help and serve people. I’m a servant and I love serving people. I love helping people. I love the way I make people feel. I want to have an impact. I believe in purpose. The reward is having a positive impact on someone’s life. That’s priceless to me.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn to stop trying to please everyone and its okay to say no. There was a time in my life that I was trying to please everyone but myself. I wanted to see everyone happy. I was always concerned with everyone’s feelings. I would try to do anything for everyone and it was draining me. I was concerned with what people would think because I represented a station, a company, and a brand, I was a spokesperson for an entire local television network. I felt so many people depended on me and I didn’t want to let anyone down. I wanted to please everyone. I would try to be nice to people who were not even nice to me. I had to realize that no matter how good you are to people, there will always be someone who doesn’t like you or doesn’t like what you do. Throughout the years, I learned to lean on my faith in God more. I learned to trust him wholeheartedly. I learned to let go and let God.
