We were lucky to catch up with Tamaya recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tamaya , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I were to start over, what I would do differently is trusting my intuition more and have more confidence in myself. I wouldn’t question the opportunities opening up to me so much and thinking that I’m not ready or not good enough to take them on and I would just go with it. I wouldn’t be uncomfortable in places where I know less because I would know the value of surrounding myself with people Who know more than me and who are further in life. You learn so much with the right people in your circle ! Lastly I wouldn’t care so much about what people may or may not say, whether they validate or not my vision. It’s my vision for a reason.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am from France, I moved here six years ago in Miami. It took me about a year/ a year and a half to really find my groove and my tribe here. I didn’t really build strong relationships In the beginnings because I guess I was very shy but also trying to understand the culture and the flow of Miami.(On top of learning English and Spanish fluently.) I then decided to create my own dance class that would be inclusive, that would aim to make everybody feel welcome and loved. And it became a community and a movement, Electricwhine. It has been a project I have been working on for the past five years. A project that became a business. I became a personal trainer and group fitness instructor along the way and when Covid happened, I had to be creative and act fast! I was able to bring my community online, I put all my knowledge and resources into a coaching program that aim to help women to feel sexy and confident. It has helped my community and clients to not be ashamed or feel guilty to put themselves first, To go after their dreams and what they really want in life and many other results and benefits. I use dance and fitness as a tool for women to feel sexy and confident, to embrace their feminine energy & work on themselves, they cultivate the feeling of “feeling capable.” That same feeling I encourage them to apply to other areas of their lives, their career, their relationship, their dreams and goals.
I run my coaching services online, through my dance classes hosted here in Miami, and one on one dance lessons or personal training.
A few years following up the first interview I can definitely say that I am very committed to my community, to my girls and to their growth. I care a lot about them, how they feel and how they show up for themselves. We built a strong sisterhood and support system and I couldn’t have done it without the support and involvement of my members! They do contribute to the well-being and positive energy of the community where everybody feels welcome and found a home!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I actually really love this question. I don’t just have one story but I would definitely love to share my philosophy. The way I see it is I am on this planet to fulfill my mission and my purpose and I won’t stop until I’m satisfied. Helping people is something that I’m passionate about. Being that person that I wish I had in the times that I needed the most is what I love to be for others. It’s not their fault if I am going through some thing or hard times so my goal is to always show up with my best attitude regardless of what may happen in my personal life. I gave up everything and everybody when I moved here from France, I had $500 in my pocket and I didn’t know anybody I think that says enough. I would say that you will have tough times and it’s part of life. But the most important is who you are becoming and how you’re managing and handling those tough times. And I’m not saying that I am managing everything perfectly every time but one thing that everybody can attest and confirm is that I always show up regardless of how I feel or regardless of what’s going on because my purpose is bigger and the people who believe in me and my services , my clients & my community, deserve my full presence and the best of me at all time.
If I can give one advice is just to be careful to not burn out. And in order to to prevent burn out you need to make sure that you put yourself first regardless of what’s happening. Have a morning routine. Have a regimen. Journal. Get your workout in. We live in Miami it’s freaking beautiful outside go for a walk, go for a run, hug a palm tree (literally!), jump in the ocean, talk to the ocean, we’re so close to nature here just don’t get lost in the hustle and stay AUTHENTIC. Being yourself is the best gift that we can pass on to others and the best thing we can do for ourselves.
Challenging times make resilient people.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The algorithm is a little bit different nowadays but I think that the main key is again to be yourself, people will feel it if you’re not authentic. Also you need to care about people. Do you talk to your audience? Do you DM them ? do you check up on them do you answer your comments? Do you offer value on your page? Collaborating with other entrepreneurs or dancers or fitness coaches is also something that I enjoy doing and has helped me with building my social media presence.
