We were lucky to catch up with Tamarya Cobb recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tamarya, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
First, I’m going to start by saying yes, I am happier as a business owner. It took me some time to get to this point so let me explain. Going into business I’ve always had the idea that it’ll be peaches and cream. Well….that didn’t age well. I was 15 years old when I started so of course I didn’t know all the key points of running a business. I was so focused on the glitz and glam when in all actuality that’s just a taste of business. When you’re at that point you haven’t even got your foot in the door. You just cracked it open. So you ask, do I think about having a regular job? Of course. About 90% of business owners probably do. All the sleepless nights, the stressful days, the crying out to God asking him is this meant for you because you see no progress, the slow months, and much more. As entrepreneurs 9 times out of 10 were the face behind everything so it get hard sometimes. I then take a step back and I see everything that I questioned is now happening. That’s God giving me reassurance that this is for me! I am strong enough, I can and will get through those difficult times because I’m destined for this. God put this on my plate because he knows me more than I know me. People ask me, “so if you have that thought of having a regular job, why haven’t you done it?” That’s my answer. God. Proverbs 3:5-6 “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Tamarya, the face behind Glamorous Aesthetic Spa. I am a licensed esthetician in the state of Missouri. Let’s dive in first with a quick back story of my life. Growing up I always had a strong foundation. My mom and dad were/are both active plus my stepmom, which I refer to as my second mom. My dad seemed to always be in my ear telling me things that if we’re being honest I didn’t really want to hear, but it has helped me tremendously! All three of my guardians were constantly go getters. Not only were they teaching me how to be independent, they also taught me the qualities of work ethic, ambition, being independent, and so on. As previously stated, I started my business at 15 years old. I then graduated high school a year early at the age of 16. A few months after I graduated high school, I turned 17, and took on Esthetician school. After 6 months of trial and tribulations, I graduated and passed both of my exams. I am still going strong as an entrepreneur, and recently have presented my first ever lash class. I will teach other women how to start businesses as well as my techniques of a lash artist and esthetician. The best discipline that I have and how I got this far is because I am all ears. I love learning! There is always going to be someone that knows a little more than you. It’s okay to take a step back and take that advice. What makes me different as a business owner is although I consider people my clients, I also consider them as people who deserve to be heard. I enjoy my job because I get to connect with ladies that I just interacted with. My clients get to talk about anything they would like without me being biased. They typically call it mini therapy sessions. I have a passion for what I do and I genuinely feel like I found my purpose.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to have a “this is my business, so I do what I want” mentality in full effect. This is probably one of the worst mentalities that you can have while in business. Do you know what’s one the biggest downfalls to business? Customer service. Instead of having that mindset, have the mentality that clients are always right even if they’re not. Why? Because you can’t fight fire with fire. Although you’re probably not intentionally trying to lose clients, it’ll happen with a mindset like this. Taking a professional loss is better than an unprofessional one. Your name and image are two of the most important things while running a small or large business. Always have sympathy and an understanding when it comes to your clients, and never show frustration to them. You are the business owner so even if they do, it doesn’t have to be reciprocated. You and the client both deserve to be satisfied. I’ve dealt with a situation before which made me tweak things in my business. So, of course you’ll make mistakes, but that’s no excuse if you’re not learning and making changes from them.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I always voice that we live in a time now where social media is the new life, so why not take advantage of it? Post, post, post! If you have content post it. It doesn’t matter how many times you post a day because most likely each post won’t do numbers. If you’re not marketing you will never grow. People decide if they want to come to you or not based off of how you present yourself and the skill level of your work. So I’ll ask, how do you expect to gain a client when they have nothing to look at? Make your page look intriguing to look at. Not too much, not too bland, just right. If I had any advice it would be to invest. Pay for your page to get promoted to local audience, go spend that $3 on a flyer to get that attraction. There are so many ways to get out there. I seen this quote that stuck with me. It said “If you aren’t willing to work for it, don’t complain about not having it”.
