Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tamara Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tamara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am happier as a business owner because for years I’ve told myself: “Someday I’m going to own my own business because I am tired of having to answer to a supervisor & clock in on someone else’s time clock everyday.” I’ve definitely had a thought in getting a regular job lately because of business being slow at times and I am one to always have income coming in. I have been working since age 14, so I’m not used to not working. Around the end of the month & the 1st of the month, business is always slow due to people having to pay bills and rent and so forth. Well, those are the times that I really need my business to be booming so to speak and making money as well, so yes I have thought of getting a part time job to help out whenever this occurs. But then I think, nope I’m going to stick it out because this is what I’ve wanted for so long! To be my own boss!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an Atlanta native, born and raised here. I am happily married with 2 beautiful daughters and 1 beautiful granddaughter and they all mean the entire world to me. I started my business back in August 2020 when Covid hit and schools closed so I had no choice but to stay home with my youngest daughter because of this. At the time, I had been working in the medical field as a Registered Medical Assistant for 8 years and really couldn’t see myself doing anything outside of the medical field. I’d always wanted to start my own business and even thought that when I did, it would be in the field that I had been working in for years. Well, in becoming a stay at home wife and mother, I was always in the kitchen at this point. And I have always loved to cook and loved to see people enjoy my food, but I’d never thought that I would actually start and open my own food business. That is when I came up with a name for my business Tasty T’s Kitchen and took off on social media building my clientele. Anyone that knows me, knows that I’ve always been a really great cook, so that was a great way to kick start my business by word of mouth. I’ve had some rough patches here and there with my health with me having Lupus, but I never allowed it to stop me from doing what I set my mind out to do and that’s becoming a successful small business owner. Anyone can cook an amazing meal and people like it, but that’s what sets me apart from all the rest….I cook with alot of LOVE!! I learned from my mother and grandmother as a young child the ins and outs of the kitchen, but was always told that I had add my own touch and that was love. Anyone of my customers that’s had any of my dishes from my authentic Mexican tacos to my collard greens, macaroni and cheese and tender Chuck roast that they literally taste the love cooked in my food. And I do all of this out of the comfort of my very own kitchen at home. My dream is to have a food truck very soon.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch with my clients via social media and sometimes when it comes to my regular customers, via telephone and text messages. I try to gain somewhat of a personal/business report with my clients. I keep up with birthdays and special events with my clients to make them feel just as good as they make me feel when patronizing my business and sending me new clientele as well. I truly appreciate all of my clients more than they’ll ever know!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Well, I’ve always been a socialite all my life and have always had many followers mostly from school and people I know from way back when. So, before I even started my business, I would always post pictures of my meals I’d cooked for myself and my family anyway. My family and friends would say: “You can count on Tamara to always take pictures of everything and post it.” Well, I must say that my picture taking and posting paid off very well. As far as advice for those just starting to build a social media presence, presentation is everything! I take pride in what I post and what other’s see. If it looks good and very presentable, then 10 times out of 10, the customer will definitely want to at least try out your food/product at least once and you take it from there!
