Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tamara Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tamara, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents have always empowered me to be an independent women. From a young age, they taught me to be self-sufficient by teaching me how to save
money, plan for the future, and always be able to rely on myself.
As an adult, I can appreciate all they did to help make me the woman I am today.
As a teen, I was always wondering why I was the only one of my friends who had
to give up sports in exchange for a job. In all honesty, I was jealous of my friends
who had everything handed to them. Looking back now, I recognize that my
parents set me up for a stable, independent, adult life. At age 15, I started
working at a pizza restaurant and learned how to balance my bank account, how
to pay for my own car, gas, insurance, as well as save and pay for college. If I
didn’t know how to do something, they always encouraged me to research and
find resources to help. At age 16, I became a sterilization technician at a dental
office and continued on to the Dental Assisting profession by challenging the
dental boards. By the time I graduated from high school, I was able to pay my own
college tuition and put myself through dental hygiene school.
The skills that I was taught at a young age and my personal drive towards
improvement have made me the business owner that I am today.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I was born and raised in San Diego and enjoy the beach, hiking, and spending time with family and my animals. I earned my Dental Hygiene degree in 2009 after
having many years of experience as a Dental Assistant. My journey into Orofacial
Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) began with my own personal and family
experiences with orofacial dysfunction. Being tongue tied, mouth breathing, and
having orthodontic treatment three times, I went through orofacial myofunctional
therapy to eliminate my oral dysfunction. This experience planted a spark that,
upon finishing the program, continued to grow and resulted in a desire to pursue
OMT. In 2016, I began studies in OMT with extensive training and education. In
2017, I opened Facial Physique helping patients improve breathing, sleeping, and
health through improving muscle function of the head and neck. Patients come to
me to help stabilize orthodontic outcomes, help temporomandibular joint
discomfort (TMJ), improve obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, reduce allergies,
eliminate mouth breathing, and more. Helping patients feel better brings me a
sense of accomplishment, excitement, and joy!
Any advice for managing a team?
Like many people, I have been a part of many teams where I did not feel valued. This realization has driven me to learn more about supporting a team physically,
mentally, and emotionally. I strive to learn what each team member values, what
drives them to come to work, their strengths, and weaknesses. With this
information, I am able to work with each team member individually to help them
improve in their professional lives. It’s also important to always remember that
each and every one of us is human; we all make mistakes. But that’s how we
learn. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn and grow. Every success is an
opportunity to celebrate that growth.
However, the best investment I have made in learning to build a positive, high-
performing, complimentary team is taking the core-four assessments contained in
the People Plus Purpose course. These core-four assessments include inspiration sources, action approaches, emotional agility and cognitive styles. Dr. Matthew Norton has a unique teaching style
and genuinely loves to help build healthy and happy teams.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Connecting, sharing, and collaborating with other professionals is my number one strategy. My experience has taught me that spreading awareness can only go so
far by itself, but can move mountains in numbers. Taking the time and making
the effort to connect with professional communities and referring providers has
been the most organic and effective strategy for growing my clientele.
