Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to fertility acupuncturist Tamara Roe, L.Ac.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tamara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’re complete cheeseballs and so we love asking folks to share the most heartwarming moment from their career – do you have a touching moment you can share with us?
Over the years I’ve had the privilege working with hundreds of patients who had struggled with infertility, but made it through to the other side with a perfect baby (or babies) so heartwarming stories are a regular part of the job!
I can share the most recent story, though.
I have a patient who was given less than a 1% chance of conceiving a baby with her own eggs. At 36 years old, she was already peri menopausal with diminished egg reserve and poor egg quality.
After trying unsuccessfully for a few years to conceive, my patient and her husband concluded it was time to look into using an egg donor. They began the search, quickly found the perfect donor, and things started to fall easily into place.
Two embryos resulted from the donor’s eggs and the husband’s sperm.
My patient also restarted her weekly acupuncture treatments with me during this time because she wanted to optimize her fertility and overall hormonal health before the embryo transfer.
Then last week she came into my office with an ultrasound photo. I was so confused because the frozen embryo transfer hadn’t happened yet and was still several weeks away.
The ultrasound photo was actually of her naturally conceived baby. Because of her weekly acupuncture, she began ovulating again and got pregnant on her own!
Despite being given less than a 1% chance of ever conceiving, my patient is now naturally pregnant.

Tamara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been practicing acupuncture and integrative medicine since 2004. When I began my career as a licensed acupuncturist, I was immediately drawn to treating infertility and reproductive disorders. Something about this area of medicine deeply resonated with me so I made it my goal to learn all I could from everyone I could about integrative reproductive medicine. It became the focus of my practice and has led to a more fulfilling career than I ever could have imagined.
My true passion is helping my patients reach their goal of motherhood. I believe every woman who wants to be a mother should have that opportunity. In my practice I create individualized treatment plans to support my patients in healing their bodies and optimizing their health so they can have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.
I think the ideal approach to reproductive healthcare is to blend the very best aspects of Eastern medicine with the most useful aspects of Western medicine. When I utilize an integrative model of healthcare, I am able to incorporate labs and other diagnostics into my treatment protocols, and then I create a unique treatment plan for each patient that combines acupuncture, herbal prescriptions, and diet and lifestyle strategies.
Some of my patients only want to take a natural approach towards fertility and pregnancy while other patients prefer to combine acupuncture and integrative medicine with their western IUI or IVF treatments. In the end, a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby is the ultimate goal so I’ll do whatever I can to help make that happen for each patient.
Over the past 18 years of practice, I have helped hundreds and hundreds of women get pregnant and have babies. I honestly can’t think of a more rewarding career.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Learning to trust your intuition as well as cultivating clear emotional and energetic boundaries are both equally essential for a successful integrative fertility practice.
As an integrative medicine practitioner, a large part of the medicine I practice is rooted in science, but as an acupuncturist, a significant part of my practice is energetic and intuitive by nature. I’ve learned that the more I tap into my intuition, the more effective I am.
Additionally, working with fertility patients is rewarding in innumerable ways, but it can also be emotionally taxing at times. When my patients struggle or grieve a loss, I feel their pain, too. To be successful in this field, it is helpful to be an empath, but the flip side is that an empath must learn to establish boundaries to protect themself emotionally, otherwise this career would be unsustainable in the long run.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I genuinely care about my patients and their successes. My acupuncture practice is much more than just a job to me. The patients that walk through my doors are not numbers. Each person has their own unique story and set of circumstances, and I try to honor that when I am working with them. I like to believe my compassion for my patients comes through, and this is why patients feel connected to me and to their treatments and why they refer their friends and families to me.
I’ve been practicing this medicine for almost 2 decades, so I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of women who’ve had hundreds of babies. Successful pregnancies also help to build a reputation.
