We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamara Falvai a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tamara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
A defining moment for me in my career was when I realized that the support I was looking for in my health journey wasn’t there. I wanted a specific and in-depth knowledge of a way to treat pain and injury. More recently, this has also evolved to include treating perimenopause and menopausal woman. So by tuning into what it was I needed and couldn’t find it changed the trajectory of my career by leading me to specialize.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After college I backpacked around South East Asia for a few months. During that trip I discovered my path to Traditional Chinese Medicine while doing a meditation retreat at a Buddhist monastery in Nepal.
I am a licensed acupuncturist located in Malibu and have been treating patients for the last 19 years. I specialize in pain management and orthopedics using modalities such as acupuncture, micro e -stem, cupping, moxa, postural assessment, exercises/stretches, and massage. More recently, I have noticed a lack of knowledge and support for woman going through perimenopause/menopause and have become invested in supporting this community through TCM and health coaching by empowering them to invest in lifestyle changes which lead to relief from symptoms. I recently completed a Health Coach Certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition which has brought another level of depth to my treatments, allowing clients to make sustainable changes to their health.
A few years ago I started a weekly community acupuncture hour in Malibu in addition to offering private sessions and in home treatments.
One of the projects I am most excited about currently is the online based program I am developing to offer woman suffering from symptoms associated to transitioning into their “second spring”, which is what the Chinese call Menopause.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Finding a niche that resonates with you and becoming an expert in all things related to that niche. This allows you to increase the value you provide to your clients, enhancing the quality of your treatments. Developing a speciality helps you stand out in your field and build trust within the community and clients.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I am in that time now! Business is constantly evolving as you are and I am feeling the call to shift my practice to include supporting woman in perimenopause and menopause through an online platform. With my training as a health coach and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, I will be offering support to these woman through either one on one coaching or through my signature online program.
