We recently connected with Tamara Dotson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tamara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Let me tell you about when and why I took the risk of being an entrepreneur and working for myself and how it has been the best experience of my life!
Being an entrepreneur, finding out my passions, realizing what I loved to do outside of working for someone else and being good at those things started around 13 years old. Around this age was when I was obsessed with the cartoon ,the powerpuff girls, it was my favorite connection to how I wanted to be and how my girl group of close girlfriends operated. As the motivator and starter of a brand and movement I wanted us to rule the world, defeat all evil, enjoy life, help the world be happy with our impact all while looking pretty doing it ! (I was Buttercup growing up my closest cousins were the other two , but I had my moments where I was giving blossom and bubble personality too lol) Anyways the secret ingredient I always possessed was a “go getta” mindset and so I led the boss girl idea into a movement of getting hoodies sprayed painted with diva words, throwing parties and networking events with the girls and family members, traveling around Brooklyn attending the hottest spots and meeting new and big time people , all while saving and making money as best as I could! And up until now at the age of 30 I still do this even with the risks and hard work involved. Just like a power puff girl it takes muscle , risk taking, mental strength and being a motivator for yourself! I learned as I reached college that I did a great job of finding ways to make my life better for myself through change and being a risk taker. Although many people don’t see the hours , the times you’ve told them yes and made a million things happen at once, the sleepless nights, the investments, the being taken advantage of, dealing with doubt, family pressure etc..they only see success without all the behind the scenes. I always made sure to keep God in my life so that even with those things happening it never stopped me from generating and manifesting everything I wanted. The key to being a risk taker as an entrepreneur for me is having multiple sources of income and impact! When you are able to generate multiple sources of income it’s like the saying goes “Don’t put all the eggs in one basket”. My ability to make money from multiple sources allowed me to not be at risk with just relying on one thing and having limitations.
I love being a teacher / educator as my day job and although some days are amazing others are tiring but being able to always have a game plan and find out ways of creating and having in place multiple sources that are suitable for me gave me an added steady flow from the very beginning when I was younger. Although I am a risk taker, I’m not willing to risk anything for my peace, happiness, and spirituality. I know I have the potential to do extremely well for yourself and have done so. I tell people all the time “Don’t underestimate yourself and God”. I believe “the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward”. I trust myself and my way and just want to inspire people. Sometimes your level up requires a new location (I’ve moved from my birth town) new people (I’ve went from two hands filled of “friends” to two friends and plenty of beautiful genuine partners) new environments, and etc… don’t let fear or doubt ever hold you back from taking risk and no matter where I’m at , where I go and what I do , I will always thrive and so can you!
Tamara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a multi talented creator I can do anything I put my mind to and I love helping others by inspiration, my personality and by providing five stars customer service with whatever products or services I provide. I am most proud of myself for taking the risk to believe in myself as an entrepreneur and girl boss and working for myself. I love teaching students as an educator and running a tutoring business all while networking and attending events and traveling. I want people to live through me and take the risk to create the life they want to live as well!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
To sum it up short and sweet, the most effective strategy for growing clientele is letting your clients speak and showcase for you and showing people results and feedback. Growing from any lessons learned with clients, reflecting on the positive words and interactions with clients. Remembering that I am doing something special just by being myself.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’ve became unstoppable once I stopped believing only what others told me and wanted for my life. I use to think I had to remain the same way and not change at all because then that would mean people would think I was fake or that I was better than them. But I learned that many people deal with intimidation and their egos in negative ways and don’t want to see you doing better than them. You can only pray for those people and love from a distance. I learned that being a butterfly requires you first be a caterpillar and although people may want you to keep remaining small and on the ground, God what’s you to awaken and fly.
