We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamara Capel-Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tamara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

Working for luxury brands for over 15 years I always knew I wanted to create a brand that spoke more to me. My love for contemporary art, fashion, photography, and beauty gave me the inspiration to start Mutha Art Gallery. After motherhood, I rediscovered my fearless, confident, badass self through fashion, art and lifestyle. I wanted Mutha Art Gallery to be centered around art and not just fashion. Uniqueness, style, and originality is what I continued to search for when creating my designs. Yes, tee shirts and sweatshirts are sold at millions of retail locations. However, my statement tees, original photographic tees taken in the 70’s and hand painted sweatshirts would only be found at Mutha Art Gallery. A FEARLESS, CONFIDENT, BADASS stands out from the norm and marches to their own beat. I recently introduced my custom hand painted oversized button down shirts! I get excited when I’m painting blank canvases that happens to be fashion. The best of both worlds!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Started my career in sales, sales management to Store Director, giving me a solid foundation in the business of fashion. Previously worked with some of today’s top designer brands such as Vera Wang Bridal, Tiffany & CO, Tumi, and Shinola Detroit. Throughout my career path, I always created a lane for herself to explore entrepreneurship. My love for contemporary art, fashion, photography, and beauty gave her the inspiration to start Mutha Art Gallery.

Mutha Art Gallery is an online fashion destination for you to get inspired and shop. You will find a curated collection of everyday goods inspired by FASHION + ART + LIFESTYLE. MUTHA apparel is the essential signature line that highlights the FEARLESS, CONFIDENT, BADASS on the move. You will find statement tee shirts, sweatshirts, and a curated collection of inspired high fashion looks. The newest collection that released this summer is the “Abstract” shirt an oversized button down shirt that can be worn as a dress or shirt. We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

Handbooks don’t exist neither does structure when starting a new business! You learn as you go. When I worked for high luxury brands I was able to look up exactly what I needed to know or make a phone call to get my questions answered. Business operations were already in place. When starting a business you don’t have the answers, the structure or anyone to call on. You are creating your own business culture!
