We recently connected with Tamara A Dopwell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tamara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Social Workers are known to be helpers and healers and not always viewed as business savvy. I have entered the space of Social Entrepreneurship to dismantle this belief.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Brooklyn Social Worker and Community Connector. I started this t-shirt line to help contribute to poverty-stricken families residing in a local shelter. Families receiving public assistance don’t always have what is needed, the basics, toothpaste, body wash, toiletries.
My core belief is that every human being deserves dignity and respect. Essential items are just that! Essential!
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Instagram. I knew nothing about designing and I leveraged the power of social media to find other local black businesses to support my vision.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Covid changed the world, and it definitely changed the way I do things. I had to increase my social media presence in order to capture a new audience. I utilize this strategy to date and continue to expand on it.
