We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tamar Turner . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tamar below.
Tamar, appreciate you joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
I would not let the fear of the unknown get to me as much as it did early on. I was so worried about how things were going to be received by my audience and if I was doing things the right way that I almost feel as if I was holding myself back. Instead of trying to make sure everything is perfect, trust my gut feeling and just go with it. I could have started some things much sooner than I did had I adopted this mentality. I always think about the ‘what ifs’ but now I am so locked in, that whatever comes to my mind I just try to put a course of action behind it.
Tamar, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who have never heard of the Down 2 Business Podcast, I would want you to first and foremost know that we are here for YOU. We recognize that you are passionate about what it is you do or the industry you are in, but rather than keeping this passion bottled up…we want the world to see what you have to offer.
We are here to provide virtual and in-person interviews to business owners, entrepreneurs and creatives of all sorts. We love partnering with businesses to do giveaways and allow our audience to see just how many dope products and services are out there at your disposal.
We started back in 2019 and nearly three years later have two live events under our belt and so many more plans starting as early as next year on the East Coast.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn very early on with starting the podcast was only showing love to those who showed love to me. I really started this podcast from a genuine space and with the notion that I want EVERYONE to succeed. Well how could this remain true if I was picking and choosing who to spotlight? Who am I to say who is deserving and who isn’t?
The moment I realized that embracing everyone would always suit me better than being strategical, I noticed miracles began to happen. Opportunities started to arise that I can’t say would have been the same if I didn’t change my mindset. It was so important for me to highlight each and every person I came across because there are truly some unique and life-changing stories out there. While I can certainly understand why some people may adopt the principle of only reciprocating what is done to them, I just realized I was not one of those people.
It was not an easy reflection to have with myself, but it is something that in the end I do not regret the choice I made one bit. If anything, I wish I would have sat down with myself sooner and really came to this conclusion.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the biggest thing that helped me in the building the reputation I have within my market is not being afraid to make myself uncomfortable. To take it a step further, I am never hesitant when it comes to shooting my business shot.
At this stage in my life, the worst answer I can receive is “no” and even then I won’t give up, but simply explore other options. When you think about your craft and just how passionate you are about it, you can NEVER be afraid to go after what it is you truly want. Especially if that particular something will help take your business to the next level.
Being consistent in that regard has truly allowed me to continue to become reputable at what I do, even though things may not always work out in my favor. Fall down 9 times, get up 10!
