We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Talisa Caldwell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Talisa below.
Talisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Freedom Creators Co started in the kitchen of my mom’s house. I was about 5 months pregnant at the time, and had moved back in with my mom so that she could help me initially with the new baby.
I knew that I was about to become a single mother, and that I had to find a way to provide for my son who was on the way. I knew at the time that I didn’t want to work a 9-5 because I wanted the freedom to be able to be around my son as much as I wanted.
This season of my life was very slow, almost painfully so. I felt I needed to come up with something soon, but didn’t know what it would be.
As a pregnant woman, my belly was slowly growing and I (like a lot of mothers) had the fear of getting stretch marks. I wanted to find some sort of creme to put on my belly in order to avoid the dreaded marking of motherhood. I started researching some natural products because I suffer with severe eczema and cannot use any products that have harmful chemicals in them. After doing some research, I was dismayed by the amount of chemicals that were still found in skin care products, even when they were labeled as “all natural.”
I decided to research which ingredients were beneficial to the skin, and try to make my own creme.
That’s how the Skin Balm started. Once I realized that my formula was not only good for stretch marks, but also for my eczema, I decided I wanted to try out sharing my products with the world!
So, I created a small batch, took some photos, and posted them on Facebook. I think I got maybe one or two sales, but I was hooked! I realized that I could create something that people could enjoy, and I knew that all natural products were quickly rising in demand.
I knew this was worthwhile after going to my first farmers market and completely selling out of Skin Balms! I felt it was God’s way of telling me that I was on the right path.
I am excited to now offer a wide range of natural products, from skin care to candles and even herbal teas! It has not been an easy couple of year, but I feel blessed to be able to work on my business full-time and slowly watch it grow and progress.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Talisa Caldwell originally started Freedom Creators Co during COVID-19 because she wanted to make an all natural skin care brand that even she could use having suffered with eczema her entire life. It was a difficult start as a single mother, but Freedom Creators Co soon took off, seemingly overnight!
Along with natural Skin Care, we have expanded to making Beeswax Candles, Soaps, and Organic Teas because we believe that it is very important what you put in and on your body. We only use high quality, natural ingredients from trusted resources to insure that you are getting the best product that you can’t find anywhere else.
We believe in reducing waste and protecting the planet, so all products are packaged in reusable, sustainable packaging.
We hope to make people feel good and trust that all they buy from Freedom Creators Co is made with loving intentions.
As believers, we also hope to spread the love of the Lord by being generous with what the company brings in. We donate 5% of profits to our friend’s orphanage in Masaka, Uganda called “Born Like Others.” The orphanage takes care of over 50 children in need and provides for their housing, food and schooling. We hope to be able to make a difference in these kids lives, and every little bit helps!
“And do not be conformed to the ways of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans XII:II
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think that what helps to build a reputation as a brand is to be clean, consistent and to always strive to do better.
I think where some brands lack is that they stay the same, they are not constantly innovating and trying new things. As an entrepreneur, you have to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I know that sounds strange, but truly it’s not a field for everyone because it revolves around constantly taking risk. You see what works and what doesn’t work by trial and error, then you tweak and try something new.
Growth is a constant, and in order to build a reputation, you have to show the consumer that you are willing to grow with them.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I would say for me, the best source of new clients has been from going to trade shows and also from online marketing.
I think that there is still something special about a face to face interaction with people that help them to build trust. When growing a business, people like to hear your story, and putting a face to the brand makes it so much more memorable. As an extrovert, I enjoy telling people about my products, and seeing their enjoyment when they try them out.
Through social media, I am able to tell the story of my brand, and why I do it. I’ve recently seen that people don’t just want to buy products, they want to buy the vision. Learning how to portray my vision over social media is a constant growth, but I’m slowly learning and more people are being drawn to Freedom Creators Co.
