We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Talia Fay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Talia, thanks for joining us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
Customers are my livelihood. I make sure I thank all my customers for shopping with me. I also give discounts and special offers to my customers, so they will continue to feel appreciated. I know the economy has changed drastically, so I try to keep all my prices affordable. I will never forget, I was participating in a pop up shop, and a young lady ran to my table, she was so excited, she said “I’m so happy you’re here, I’ve been looking for your table since I got here”. That comment made me feel so good, because I’ve never met her before. I decided to give her two free products, and she was extremely satisfied, with my customer service. I gained a forever customer, she’s been shopping with me for two years now. I will forever show my customers, how much i appreciate them.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I joined the candle industry, in 2020. Although I introduced my craft to the world in 2020, I was not new to the candle world. Two years prior to me launching my business, I purchased lots of candle materials and equipment, and decided to practice my craft. I decided to keep all my plans to myself, because I’m the type of person who rather show the outcome versus my actual plan. I will never forget the first candle I’ve ever made, I couldn’t smell anything. I was super disappointed, because I honestly wasn’t expecting that. I have to admit, I became a little discouraged, but I never gave up. With the support from my mom and sisters, I knew I could master my craft.
What sets me apart from others, is my customize fragrances. I spend hours mixing different fragrances together, until I feel the vibe is right. My candles literally will the entire house smelling good. I also make sure, I use the best equipment and materials, to make sure my products are good. I’m most proud of my entire business. I work extremely hard. I’m also proud of how my customers interact with me. It’s very important to have a good relationship with your customers. I want my potential customers to know, that they will not be disappointed with my customer service or my products. My brand is known for giving good energy and good vibes. The light of fay will forever light up any room. I encourage everyone to join the light show!!!!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of gaining new clients for me, is Pop Up Shops!!! When I first launched my business, I thought I would have to promote every day on social media to gain customers, but to be completely honest majority of my customers came from participating in pop up shops. I don’t just attend local pop up shops, I literally will pack up my car with all my products, and travel to different states, just to meet new potential customers. This strategy also helped my website sales increase, because people would want more candles, and instead of waiting for the next pop up shop, customers would utilize my website.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think my crazy candle names, has helped me build my reputation within my market. Every time I meet a new customer, the first thing they say is “Girl how do you come up with these candle names”. I create my candle names from real life and relatable ideas. I also have a candle collection, with diamonds on the jars, the diamond collection has also helped build my reputation.
