We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Talia Bethany a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Talia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Being a creative and working freelance is like choosing to be an entrepreneur unintentionally. As an entrepreneur you can sell a service and/or a product. As a creative you’re selling yourself as both the product and the service. So to answer the question….am I happier? Yes. Is it easy? Not at all. There are many times where I think about just giving up and applying for a full time cooperate job. However, one my resume doesn’t really reflect that anymore lol and two I could not see myself doing anything else. I find fulfillment in storytelling and collaborating with other creatives to make art. Despite every hardship. It’s all about sacrifices and calculated risks. What are you willing to do to get to your next level and how are you gonna get there?
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got in my industry by first working with my Uncle Wills Felin as a Production Assistant for his production company Jitter Flix from there I’ve continued my way through the industry working freelance with several production companies, networks, and on independent works. Not only am I a filmmaker but I am also a wardrobe stylist and DJ. I believe what sets me apart from others is my ability to be of service to others, my networking skills, and my resourcefulness. I am most proud of the connections I’ve made throughout the years. I want people to know that I am always one message away. I am here on this earth to create and share my knowledge. Never be afraid to hit me up!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I am a person that really loves hearing about other people’s stories and journeys especially people I admire. The podcast Business of Hype hosted by Jeff Staple is a classic and has so many good episodes including some of my favorite artists and designers like Kerby Jean-Raymond, Salehe Bembury, Melody Ehsani, and Joe Freshgoods.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is no particular goal or mission but one day I would definitely love to open a creative studio.
