We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tali Golergant. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tali below.
Tali , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I recently had to take a risk in my career that I am very proud I took. It was a challenging choice to make but I felt very empowered and strong when doing so. Currently, I am in the audition process for the Eurovision Contest 2024 to represent Luxembourg. Throughout the process, I collaborated with a couple great producers and songwriters and met some great people in the industry. This week, I unexpectedly found out that the three songs I submitted passed the next stage and was additionally asked to sing for one more track; making that four potential winning songs. Despite being proud of all three songs I submitted and very happy that all passed, I knew in my gut that there was one I believed in most and one that most represented me as an artist and person. This one song authentically spoke to me in ways that the others didn’t. Because of this gut feeling, I took a big risk. I decided to only submit that one song to the next round of auditions. I knew that this was going to limit my chances of getting picked as the judges were only going to hear one song instead of four. However, I was so proud of that one song that I said “fuck it, if they don’t like it, then at least I went with the one song I believe represents my most authentic self”. I wasn’t going to sing a song that was incredible but that wasn’t authentic to me. It was a risk, but a risk I am proud of and a risk that hopefully will take me further. No matter what happens in the next audition stage, I went with my gut and my most authentic self rather than trying my hardest to win the competition.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a singer/songwriter from Luxembourg currently based in NYC with a Peruvian father and an Israeli mother! I started my music journey with classical piano at the age of seven. At twelve, I discovered singing, theater, and songwriting and fell in love with all three immediately. I released my first single “Temporary” in 2020, which has over 70k streams on Spotify. I then released my debut EP of four songs called “lose you” which was co-written with artist Francis of Delirium. This EP was centered around the theme of “loss”; whether that is losing someone or yourself. Post-pandemic, I started gigging shows with my own music in NYC, including venues like RockWood Music Hall, The Bowery Electric, Mercury Lounge, Arlene’s Grocery, and The Delancey. At the moment, I am working on a funk/jazz/R&b Album with an upcoming new band called “Blue Stripes”. I am very excited to start this new project and see where it takes us!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Currently I’ve realized two things that I want to make a priority or mission in my creative journey. One is that life is about the small things. Yes, there is that big dream of making money from music and impacting people’s lives with the music that you write. However, as creatives you can get wrapped up in this dream and put so much of your worth into it. Recently I’ve realized that happiness comes from things like having a nice meal with your loved one or something as simple as going to the park or to the beach. Your happiness should never depend on your goals and how well your career is going, which is something I will continue to try to remind myself. I want this to drive my creative journey.
Secondly, my other goal in my creative journey is to be timeless. It is an extremely hard thing to achieve, however, I want to be an artist that is timeless; an artist that doesn’t “die off” and always keeps inspiring others and growing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to be able to impact people with your music. When I wrote my EP about the theme of “loss”, I had a couple people reach out to me that the EP made it easier for them to deal with loss and grieving a loved one. I heard extremely powerful stories that reminded me of what I do and why I do it.
