Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Talaya Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Talaya , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
As a creative and a black, plus size, busty female rapper I have faced a lot of criticism and judgement. My lyrics can be explicit at times but it’s an expression of my sexuality and feminine energy, which is constantly misunderstood. When I began my music journey it was also part of my healing journey. I spent my early teen years and first year of college in a toxic relationship and when it ended I had to find my identity all over again. While doing so I began to lean more into my sexuality, style and the dating world. Through these experiences I was able to create my first single “Break Dat Bag.” My first single was me expressing how I truly felt inside and how I felt people were perceiving me. I took people judging me for my photos and body shape and turned it into my self love mantra. The lyrics for “Break Dat Bag” was a message to all individuals who ever tried to talk down on me or ever made me feel like I was not good enough or a whore for being sexually liberated. The song allowed me to express that I am confident and the under handed statements, false rumors and judgment aren’t called for and will not affect my growth as a person. Some might here my lyrics and think it’s only “p***y rap” but it’s much more it’s self love anthems.
Talaya , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Talaya Moore also known as Miss Plumpiana. I am a NYC based creative musical artist and much more coming out of Harlem and Chelsea. Before I became a rap artist I studied and received my Bachelor’s of Science in Mass Communication with a minor in event planning from SUNY Oneonta in 2017. Shortly after graduating I began working with The Moth as a story teller. Through The Moth I was able to perform all over the United States in sold out theaters telling my true life story on growing up homeless as a child in NYC. Also, after college I studied improv with “Uprights Citizens Brigade” for a couple year which has helped with my passions for acting as well.
I started my official music journey around 2019 and debut my single “Break Dat Bag” and later EP “Boss Bit*h Music”. In 2023 I released six singles and three music videos. In 2024 I released debut singles and music videos for 4Hire”, “C’mere Stank, along with some freestyles and features. I I have been seen on platforms such as “HAZARD LIGHTS”, “RAP IT UP”, “TALK OF THE STREETS”, Daniel’s Leather, The Model Experience, Daily Paper, OTA Preshow (open to all), 3Dollar Bill, Queerchella, House Party at REBAR, MediaGirlsNetwork, and Spillitent.
I started music as a project to celebrate my 25th birthday and to leave a mark on the world. I have always loved music and have been in plays and musical theater classes which I loved. I am very proud of my music journey in these past 2 years and all I have been able to accomplish as an independent artist with no manger or label behind me. With all that’s being said I would describe myself as tenacious, glamorous, independent and my sound is very sexy, erotic and New York. I am most proud of my drive to continue to pursue music and fund my dreams by serving by day at a bar restaurant and hustling in the evening during night life. I want my supporters to know that I do this not for just me but for them. I want everyone to have music that makes them feel like they belong apart of this chaotic world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a rapper is the feedback you get from the crowd when you’re on stage. Also those moment when you are pulled to the side and told how much your music moved someone or helped them through a tough period in their life. I find it rewarding as well when I’m able to bring other creatives into my projects and give them a platform to showcase their art and talents. I love dancing it’s my first passion before music and any chance I get I will book dancer to perform with me. Booking studio time and having dance rehearsal and putting movement to my lyrics is so empowering.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a child I was told I was too fat and too black to be a model or pop star. When I see myself now actually living my dream I sometimes cry. I was supposed to be nothing and I have created a name for myself. that whats keeps driving me forward, that little girl who was ridiculed and always told what she could not achieve. The ultimate goal is to be able to take care of myself and my family while doing what I love. I want to be able to give back to the communities that helped me as a child. Start foundations and a youth arts program that allows children from young to learn and grown their crafts in the arts through music, fashion, theater and more. I want my gift to keep giving.
