We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Talasia Gordon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Talasia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
I think what I do in general is easily misunderstood because nobody has ever really seen it before. It makes me an easy target for criticism and opinions because some people simply don’t understand it. My goal is not letting that deter me from what I’m called to do. I understand that the topic of how I was raised, what I’ve been through and how it brought me to where I am now is always gonna be something that I need to answer for those who don’t comprehend my style of music, artistry and the type of creativity that I bring to the gospel genre. I believe that when people can’t put you in a box they will automatically try to tell you that you’re not doing things right. But even in that, I believe in remaining true to yourself for many reasons because this is who God created you to be and God doesn’t make any mistakes. Also, on a business level, when you are or have a product that there isn’t a lot of, you can create a demand for yourself even if there’s no lane for you prior. When you strive to operate in excellence, the lane will open up if you have something that consumers enjoy. This is easy for me because this is just who I am. I’m not trying to be anybody or trying to duplicate another sound. Understanding how to carefully navigate the spaces where I’m misunderstood spiritually, and sometimes even intentionally, have opened up so many doors for me in my career. I believe those doors will continue to be open as long as I remain true to myself, remain humble, and most importantly remain prayerful. When you look at the people who have historically changed the arts in general, it’s always someone who couldn’t be duplicated that the world didn’t initially understand. There’s power in knowing who you are, knowing what your purpose is and confidently walking in that no matter what. Everybody won’t understand right away but through time and through your consistency, one day “Everybody Gon See” and they’ll get it then. If they don’t, what you do isn’t for them and that’s perfectly fine.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Born and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, I am a natural-born singer whose musical journey began as a young girl accompanying my mother to the studio, where she frequently recorded original music. After years of singing in Abundant Life Worship Center’s choir, I was inspired to write my own music, despite concerns that my unconventional lyrical and melodic style might not fit the traditional gospel genre. However, my dedication to my craft led me to develop a unique sound that strategically incorporates thought-provoking messages, helping nonbelievers and fellow Christians alike strengthen their connection to God. I hope for my music to be a beacon of hope, love, and peace in a chaotic world. It is my intention to bring a fresh sound that blends contemporary gospel with modern dance movements while embracing the spiritual roots of the genre. I have earned Gospel Song of the Year and Contemporary Christian Artist of the Year at the Maranatha Rhema Awards in June 2023, as well as Artist of the Year at the 7th Annual Avidity Awards. Most recently, I have performed on TV Show, “Bobby Jones Gospel Presents”, was featured in Nashville Voyager’s Rising Stars: “Meet Talasia Gordon of Atlantic City, New Jersey” in December 2024 and just performed at this year’s Super Bowl Weekend 2025.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A moment in my career where I had to be resilient just happened to me when I performed at Super Bowl weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana. During my last performance, someone took a video of me and posted it in a degrading manner and that video went viral with over 4 million views and so many shares that I can’t even count now. The comments under these videos where majority negative but with a good number of positive as well. I took this opportunity to first sit back and reflect on my journey and where I believe God is taking me and then I sat and reflected on how I wanted to respond to this. When you have the whole world watching you, judging every move, and criticizing you about everything, sometimes you can get distracted from what you should be focusing on. I believe this opportunity reaffirmed why it’s necessary that I continue to be myself and I continue to spread the love of God. It showed me just how what I do is necessary and how much love is needed now more than ever in this world. So we aren’t gonna back down when things get rough but instead we go harder. Obstacles only come to help you grow and to help mold you for where you’re going. When you stop looking at problems as something you’ll never get through and start looking for what you’re supposed to get out of it, you’ll find that before you know it, God turned that situation around for your good. Because I love and serve God everything HAS to work out for my good. That’s His promise! I understand that this is an opportunity for me to tell the world about Him and that I take pleasure in that.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I believe that for me to be as effective as I can, I had to unlearn some traditional and cultural practices and relearn God on a personal relationship level. It was somewhat of a heartbreaking experience for me because I felt angry, confused and like I wasted a lot of time doing things that I felt had no benefit to me spiritually. I then realized that even though these practices didn’t have any spiritual gain necessarily, they had natural benefits. It gave me structure and allowed me to be surrounded by the things of God instead of being distracted by things that could’ve allowed me to get into situations that would’ve set me back. I found the good in those practices and then begin to understand things that God really wanted us to focus on in this season. God began to speak to me about things that I ended up understanding could change the world because it was less about the practices and more about the posture of our heart. I’ve learned that when the posture of our heart is at a place of purity and genuineness, and full of the love of God, we operate differently by default. So all of the things that come along with living and serving God easily starts being a part of your everyday life and part of your everyday habits naturally, without having to be forced, criticized or shamed. I believe that if the posture of our hearts change, then duplicating discipleship in the kingdom of God becomes easy, so that’s my goal. With my music, with my life and within my relationships, I have the same goal. To show people that you can be human, you can make mistakes, you can be imperfect, your journey may take you longer than someone else’s, and everything in life wont always be peaches and cream but if your heart’s desire is to please God, it’s a little bit easier. Life is a lot better. You naturally want to love people rather than to kill them emotionally. You’ll have the words to say to someone who never would step foot in church, doesn’t understand the culture of church but can relate to you just being human and still loving & serving God. Love doesn’t condemn. Love overcomes. Love covers. Love endures.
