We were lucky to catch up with Takeya Glenn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Takeya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Following in your parent’s footsteps can be totally real, that’s where I started! Growing up my mother was a makeup artist and business owner and I was basically her shadow. I remember my senior year of high school, I told her I never wanted to work for anyone ever again and she provided me with the tools and lessons needed. That year (2017) she also passed two weeks before my graduation so once I got my diploma I relocated to Flint, MI.
From 2018-2020 was my downtime to get everything in order. I was in school, working, and being a small business owner doing makeup and creating and selling my products to whoever would listen to why I am it! I work day in and out to put Beautybrat Co on the map because I’m more than an artist, I’m a visionary. I study my field every day to become better than yesterday. With grace, strength, and faith you can literally achieve anything!
Fast forward to now I was blessed with a mentor Named Mala who created a beauty and business program under her business “Clutch Collections” and took me under her wing to not only build my business but also help me perfect my craft and skill set. We create events, reach the community, and more to put our brands on the map

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Life was a struggle, I’ve overcome so many obstacles while being young and trying to build a career but my perseverance wouldn’t let me stop even when becoming homeless at one point. I was, moving cosmetics in my little bag and working for Estée Lauder until I was able to get into a home and get myself together. As someone who lost that “day-to-day” parent, grief is real and it doesn’t go away especially when they are the reason you are who you are at this point in time, it gets hard and rocky and some days the tears don’t stop because they are uncontrollable but I give myself that downtime and get back up and PUSH! I love being an beauty guru/makeup artist, it allows me to create just like an regular artist. My brand just naturally came as I wanted to add some exclusivity into the beauty community!

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
if you’re going to follow the trend that’s OK but also remember be a trendsetter, you want people to look at your work and admire you and be like I want to become one of those people (for whatever you do) once you become that trend creator you have the world in a palm of your hands because your followers will start to grow, people will see you more—your algorithm is boosted, and now you are really on top of everything in your business because now you have the platform to catch those engagers and if you are someone that has a online store or even a brick and mortar you will be able to produce the sales that you would like because now you have everything from the engagement, products/inventory, and more under control, I’d rather be sold out than overstocked. Think of this also, We have a digital world we are living in and the more you are engaged in with going on your society you will grow! Social media is one of my biggest platforms when it comes to marketing my make up artistry and my online sales so I use that to my advantage as well as 100% being myself and people tend to love that about me.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Never be unteachable. I never was one that didn’t listen but I’ve always been kind of standoffish and I realize that yes you can be taught more than you thought you knew, literally you’re always going to learn something new it’s been so many times where I’ve been on my journey and I just keep learning things along the way and you have to be open to learning things as well its one thing to say OK I’m going to listen but if you’re not actively taking everything in, you’re going to still be in Square one. This what you don’t want for yourself you always want to elevate and continually learn on your journey especially when it pertains to managing a business because you can go from zero dollars one day to $1 million business overnight. Keep teaching yourself along the way and even find a mentor that could possibly help you along your journey because that has come in handy with mine if well.
