We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Takesha Montgomery. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Takesha below.
Takesha , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I attended Saginaw Valley State University in 2007. When I first started college I had hopes and aspirations of becoming a criminal defense attorney. I had a passion for advocacy and knew that I wanted to help others. When I graduated college in 2011 with my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice my plan was to go to law school but my plans got rerouted. I ended up working in banking for ten years before I landed a job in education. After undergrad, I went to graduate school to pursue and obtain my master’s degree in Administration. Little did I know I would land a career working in Human Resources. Shortly, after this I started working with some people at my church to help them pursue their passion. Not knowing that this was a career I discovered that I found fulfillment helping others to walk in their purpose. One day I started praying about my purpose and felt led to look up business coaching. After some research and much prayer Keys of the Kingdom Consulting was birthed with my business partner Amanda Weston. We both discovered that we had a passion to help others find their purpose. We used our past experiences in the corporate profession to coach business owners. We offer one-on-one purpose coaching, business coaching, and business services. Our company also performs market research for larger companies to help them identify their target market as well as develop business strategies to help them stand out from their competitors.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Keys of the Kingdom Consulting is a dynamic partnership made up of two business professionals Amanda Weston and Takesha Montgomery. Our company offers dynamic end-to-end business solutions for brand-new start-ups as well as for well-established kingdoms. We help businesses to secure their proper business licensure, develop efficient workflow processes, and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. We have been in business for two (2) years and have a strong pipeline of repeat clients who we’ve challenged to overcome their fears to propel forward in the marketplace. What makes our company so unique is that our business is centered around biblical principles. We believe that the Bible provides the perfect roadmap for business success and our company as well as our clients have been able to thrive on that model.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Early on we had to learn that everything will not be perfect in business. The important thing is to start and build the plane while you fly it. When we first had the idea to start the business it was a bit overwhelming at first. We sat on the idea for a few months and unfortunately, we missed two (2) significant financial opportunities. After this, we learned how important it was to move when the timing was right and how there would never be a perfect moment but as long as we were willing to learn as we go everything else would fall into place and it did.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When we first started our business we wanted to offer a lot of different services but as time begin to pass we found our niche. We have learned that it is important to be true to yourself and not to try to be like anyone else or model our business like anyone else. We firmly believe that there are certain clients that are a perfect fit to work with. Early on we learned that we have to stay true to our vision and values and not everyone is our customer and that’s okay. Being an entrepreneur is hard work and you go through seasons. We have had some challenges but the one thing that keeps us grounded is knowing that God has called us to perform the work that we are doing. On days when it gets hard and the fire inside us may not be so bright we remember that God has entrusted us with a wonderful business and we have a responsibility to steward what we have been given well because our work is so much bigger than us.
