We were lucky to catch up with Takenya Millhouse recently and have shared our conversation below.
Takenya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
During the pandemic the Isolation and fear of the unknown cast me to have a complete Nervous breakdown.
I was on suicide watch for 3 years. Everything came crashing in on me I was physical hospitalized in the phyc ward 9times in 3 years.
I was determined that I would live and not die even though I felt like it was my only out some days.
Lord today I tell my story so appreciative that The Universe saw fit that i had the strength to stand in the midst of it all GOD kept me.
In the mist of this horrible ordeal I kept say this is not the end for me I was destined to be great and I knew that My testimony would save lives.
So in the middle of my healing journey I started a podcast cast Called the Yellow table. Where I became very valnerable about my life story and the tools used to get to the other side of my trauma. Each episode was a test of my faith and with each episode we Shared our story of overcoming,Shed the dead weight and We would Grow as we. released years of baggage hold us down with what I call
Courageous Conversations. As the yellow table grew I wanted a tangible item to support people’s journey so once again I stepped out on faith and Published my first interactive journal Called the Yellow Table Journal.
I have a motto that I have engraved on my heart Nothing Wasted. Understand that nothing in your life will be wasted God uses it all .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2016 I opened my Second salon it was always a dream of mine and I was so excited that I had achieved such a thing.
In 2019 I became extremely ill my colon Had burst and it started a healing cycle that had me in the hospital for 6months. I was devastated because I was not prepared to sustain the business without me being there. I battled with the thought of shutting it down back and forth I considered keeping it open because i didn’t want the embarrassment of what looked like failure. It was during a hospital stay that my doctor advised I think hard about surviving this ordeal I was fighting for my life and stress and pressure was not what I needed. I sat with myself and said it’s was time to choose me.
You see all my life I had been a owner and boss so I didn’t know how to turn that part off me off easily I had worked through life lifing so many times i was wired to continue through pain I was wired to be a work horse no matter the circumstances.
If you a sole proprietor you can relate.
After much soul searching I choose to shut the building down that saved my life.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Consistency,Education and Professionalism
It’s been 32 years years of being a Cosmetologist and before my health battle I prided myself on alway showing up and being available for my clients during my business hours.
I am a Master Stylist with tons of education in my craft.
Professionalism how you show up and treat your clients matter.
