We recently connected with Takema James Carrion and have shared our conversation below.
Takema, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Being an in-home therapist is a very personal job because you hear and see a lot. Every week, I watched moms rush to get out the door, feel frustrated with their partner, hustle to make dinner and then watch their child have a complete meltdown because they didn’t want “that” to eat. By that point, the mom would “lose it” because she was just done with the day and a full on tantrum was the last thing she needed. I would step in, show her a couple techniques and explain what she could do differently the next time it happened. When the session was done, she would share her appreciation for everything she learned and looked a little more confident than when I arrived.
I would cross my fingers and hope she remembered what we practiced but realized more and more just how much help parents truly needed. Everyday things like brushing teeth or bathtime can turn into a category 5 hurricane in seconds and that’s when a lot of parents lose their ish. Because the reality is, being a parent can be a really beautiful experience but it can also be really hard!
I looked at my life and thought, “I could be an overwhelmed mom too”: the difference was, I knew the practical tools to be calmer, more in control, and not “lose it” as much, which is such a game changer. When I became a parent, I decided to share my knowledge with all moms so they could enjoy their motherhood experience too- all the challenges (can’t avoid it!) and the cuteness. My mission at A Wild Mama is for moms to know it’s okay if you need help connecting with your child (and yourself) during the hard and stressful moments. As long as you’re willing and open, everyday is an opportunity to become the parent you want to be…and I’m here to teach what I know to get you there.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Takema James Carrion with 1,000,001 things to do just like every woman out there! As a board certified behavior analyst, I’ve helped countless families over the last 11 years feel good about having boundaries and discipline as a parent, while still having a fun and deep connection with their children.
To be the mommy you want to be, it’s important to have a toolbox filled with practical tips and motivation to help you feel less frustrated, work around those tantrums and get your to do list done!
As an at home parent myself, I understand the negative feelings and comments that come with choosing to be at home. As a therapist, I also understand how demanding it can be to have a toddler.
When I hear amazing feedback from families that feel the shift and enjoy parenting, with all the crazy ups and downs, that’s what makes me proud and keeps me going.
The perception of at home parenting and the toddler stage has a lot of negative talk attached to it and I want to help change that. You can enjoy your motherhood experience in a way that feels good for you but not overwhelmed to the point of losing it! You can do it and I can guide you along the way. Let me be your fairy therapy mama!
Have you ever had to pivot?
The interesting thing about my business and career was that just months before the shut down of 2020, I had several experiences that altered my mindset. Those moments changed my thoughts about my business model and accelerated it in 2020, especially being pregnant with my daughter. Transitioning to the online world to help mothers teach their children boundaries and life skills was a huge pivot from my everyday but an essential one.
Major changes, whether it’s motherhood or life events, are going to shift you and it’s important to pay attention to what you need to let go and who you are becoming. Start making small changes and decisions to guide you to where you really need to be. Listen to how your body and spirit feels, spend time with yourself. Life is meant to be lived with enjoyment while still managing the challenges that are going to come your way. That pivot might seem super scary but don’t be afraid; it just might get you to the next version of yourself.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ll tell you this, building a social media presence requires a real plan. Running a business nowadays, without any social media (you don’t have to be on everything), is a negative. You have to have something. It helps people see how amazing you are because people like to buy from companies they vibe with.
To build your presence, you have to connect with who you are and your message. We all have something to say. Thinking about who do you want the world to see and who is the person you want to help is how I was able to grow. But it takes time and a lot of practice! Please remember you don’t get good overnight- time, practice and a strong motivation will get you there.
Decide on the platform you’re willing to learn and get really good at, then you can start opening yourself up to other platforms to see how you can expand your reach. My biggest piece of advice would be to focus on creating content that’s not going to stress you out. I recommend focusing on long form content because especially as entrepreneurs and moms, we have to be very proactive about our time and have the best return on investment possible. That means making your content work for you in multiple ways on social media and for where you want to go in your business. All the love and success to you on your journey!
