We recently connected with Takaria Nash and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Takaria, thanks for joining us today. Have you signed with an agent or manager? Why or why not?
I signed my first modeling contract in 2015, I took some years off & signed to Ursula Weidmann Models in ATL during the pandemic. I was a server at the time making so much money, all of a sudden no one could work anymore but the bills didn’t stop so I decided it was time for modeling to actually pay my bills. So I submitted to her online & she signed me the next day via FaceTime. She actually told me she hated my portfolio and wasn’t going to sign me but she looked at my digitals and saw the model in me. I’m very grateful for that. I wanted to work with her because a lot of the models I look up to were signed to her in the beginning, Angel Glaude, Mariama Diallo, Ashleigh Baugh, Timani Reid so in my eyes, signing to her would put me a little closer to how I envisioned my life. I ended up signing a NYC contract about a year later to EMG models. Initially when I submitted it was a no, but I resubmitted and it was a yes so I moved to NYC and began my journey as a NYC Runway model.
Takaria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Takaria Nash, I’m just a girl from Shreveport, Louisiana. My life could’ve taken many different paths coming from my environment but I always made sure to create the life I wanted. My new life started when my father gained custody when I turned 2 years old, I was coming from a household that had maggots, no hot water, no food, abuse, I had to take baths in plastic crates and eat can goods with my 5 other siblings but I knew I wanted more in the end. I knew I wanted to become a supermodel and that I needed to believe in myself the entire ride. I am most proud of being able to make it out of Shreveport, Louisiana and live the life I’ve always wanted. I now have a company where I coach models on how to become a model & create their comp cards for them the Instagram page is @thetakaribrand . I do this because I remember growing up not actually knowing how to become a model, but wanting to be one so badly. I would reach out to models all the time, and not here back and I just want to change that. You never know who I may help that may become a bigger model than me & open doors for me, you know?
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a model is being able to represent Shreveport, being able to represent African Americans, being able to represent women, being able to represent depression survivors, and being able to represent people with skin like me and let them all know that anything they do is possible. If you think it, you CAN do it.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Steve Harvey. No matter what I did the night before, how long I’d stay out I’d always make sure I’d be up for the Steve Harvey Morning Show at 6am. The show it’s self is funny of course, but I would be listening to hear Steve’s opening statements and ending statements. Steve would say things like the top is reserved for the top, don’t sleep more than 6 hours hours a day, when you’ve gotten enough rest GET UP. Steve always kept me going and kept me motivated.
