We were lucky to catch up with Tajuan Hancock recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tajuan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I want to share with you guys a short and brief life changing risk that has brought me one of my biggest blessings to this day.
In 2020 in the middle of Covid-19 I moved back to Ohio from Los Angeles to be with the person I was dating. Within 2 weeks of moving back home I was dumped. My heart was ripped out of my chest and I was devastated. I was forced to move back into my grandmother’s basement because I was so caught off guard.
I was living in my grandmothers basement for about a month before I got a call from Angela Simmons asking if I was available to do her makeup for a season for this show she was on. I didn’t automatically take it because I was so heart broken that I couldn’t think straight.
Fast forward I made it back to Los Angeles for some amazing opportunities but here’s where it’s gets interesting.
Soon as make it back to LA I get straight into work. Booked and Busy. However I didn’t think about my living situation or transportation.
In the mist of working some great opportunities with some amazing people. I am technically homeless and careless. However I wore it very well. You would have never knew and most people will not even know until they read this article.
It was a very hard mentally however I Thank God for putting me through a test and I was blessed with a beautiful condo high rise looking at the Hollywood sign in 2021 and I am still living here to this day.
So the risk was allowing myself to accept some life changing opportunities even though I didn’t know where I was sleeping and how I was going to get to work but I made it work.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Here’s a short story on how I learn that I had amazing resilience. I was working with a B list celebrity, R&B and internet sensation. We were working with eachother for about almost 3 years. We went on tours together, traveled to about 49 different cities together etc. I wasn’t only this persons makeup’s Artist I was also a good friend through pregnancy and labor and all. Well coivd came and honestly it was like we never even met. I stop hearing from this person. I stop getting responses and without no explanation. My heart was so crushed and I was so confused. I was trying to figure out what I did wrong and how I could improve but I wasn’t given that. So I had to pick myself up. Pull myself together and keep my confidence up and keep doing what I love. I felt Abandoned and as if I want good enough. I had to pull myself together quickly becuase life has to go on and I was booked by someone that’s just as great and consistent and I couldn’t bring that energy around them.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my audience and my brand was me being from a smaller city and it wasn’t no one who looked like me or offered what I offered. I stood out very quickly and I pretty much had instant gratification because I was really good at what I did and I have a great personality to match it.
