We were lucky to catch up with Tajema “Gem” Briggs recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tajema “Gem”, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?

To be successful I believe it takes consistency , dedication , resourcefulness ,grace and most of all resilience . Success is different to everyone . To be honest as we see with the pandemic times is changing and so should our mindsets . Being successful in the world of social media is simple . Be confident . Believe in yourself . If you don’t believe in you we won’t either . I started my business 4 years ago with no background in entrepreneurship . I’ve been winging it . I come from a line of entrepreneurs however my mom , dad , and grandparents died when I was young before I could get the education from them . At the age of 15 I was pulled from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute following the death of my mom & grandmother and was sent to live in a group home pregnant . I emancipated myself a month later and been on my own ever since . See , This isn’t a silver spoon story . It’s a Survivor Success story . I went back to school and graduated better late than never . After that I gained a number of skills doing various jobs even prepared taxes a few years . The career that pushed me to be an entrepreneur was USPS . Even with great pay if your heart isn’t in it do you deem being a success . I don’t . Delivering mail kept me paid ,tired, and depressed . No time for my family or fun . I had to have grace with myself and remember this doesn’t have to be a permanent solution . I fell ill at work and while out on sick leave I discovered my baby . My dream . My Gem . GemLash . GemLash taught me to be resourceful and dedicated . I can honestly say I built a business off of support from people I barely knew . No formal education when I began however I was dedicated so after 15 certifications and a License from the state of Maryland here I am . Which is why I push education as hard as I do . I feel most successful when I’m sharing the knowledge I obtained over the years . Being an entrepreneur making an impact on the world is where I feel most successful from a product being sold , restoring a clients confidence with a service or just spreading knowledge .

Tajema “Gem”, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I’m a mom of 4 , wife , beauty lover, wellness enthusiast , creative, educator and Jill of all trades . When you love what you do is it ever work ? That was my thought process stepping into the beauty industry . I loved eyelashes , wigs , and everything beauty when I was coming up watching my mom . I’m not sure how I ended up delivering mail but that career pushed me straight into the beauty industry . I was tired and want to make money doing what I loved . Beauty Services .

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Amazing customer service has to be the fastest , easiest , and organic way to build your clientele . Think about it when someone treats you well you remember that . You talk to others about it . The number of referral clients I receive is tremendous . They know they can trust me . They know they can trust my service providers. Amazing customer service . It’s a genuine strategy that I feel almost got lost somewhere in time . It’s time to bring that back .
