We recently connected with Tajay Forsythe (Mr. Goo) and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tajay , thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I wouldn’t put a time on it if I’m being honest. I had a lot of artistic influences around me from birth, from fashionable uncles and neighbors, to my most direct influence my older cousin who is a well known multi-faceted visual artist in Jamaica Nicoy Wood or most popularly known by his Nom de plume JigzSaw 3D. I was always “borrowing” his pencil crayons and pastels for as long as I can remember and I’ve always been known as a an artsy kid. I remember charging older kids in Prep school to draw Dragon Ball Z characters for them, which eventually evolved in different artistic avenues fast forward 20 plus years, I’ve dipped my fingers in Tattooing, acrylic painting, pencil art, wardrobe styling, fashion design, jewelry making, creative writing and most recently establishing myself as a taste maker in my niche.
Tajay , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who don’t know me I’m Tajay Forsythe, Magoo or Mr. Goo I’m a multi-disciplined visual artist, I’m most widely known as the well dressed body piercer. I have a love for teaching and never mind belting out all I know to help everyone I come in contact with even in theory. I get into all of my passions by networking with Masters, there should be absolutely no ego when it comes to receiving knowledge in my opinion. I have small companies that are operated by members of my team, I provide body modification, painting, jewelry making, I re-sell literature, I’m currently in the biggest rebranding of my career as I’m making myself more marketable to all ages, because of new found faith in Christ and being husband and father. I’m a one stop shop for everything creative, you can stop by to get your ears pierced and end up buying a book and ends up with me dressing you for your wedding. I don’t consider myself the most unique person, because I think being an enigma is just a costume that pretentious artsy people in the industry put on. I’m influenced by a whole lot and I pay homage to all and every, that I respect consciously. I’m most proud of the fact that even though I’ve grown over the years in my craft, people instantly and always know what I’m about, pride without ego, a helping hand to lift you up or a helping finger to point you in the right direction. If I don’t have what you want I’ll send you to who does. I don’t believe in rivalry in the industry and I don’t gatekeep. I want people to know that I’m not an artist, I am Art, I don’t just creative, I radiate art and that’s the humblest way I can put it.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My entrance into fashion was with a company I started right out of high school Called “Designs by Him”, it was supposed to be a trio of me the artist, a designer and marketing/social media person. Instead of doing what we all were supposed to do individually and play on each other’s strengths, we bled into each other’s jobs and made it overall toxic, so all in all we lost a really big investment, momentum and friendships because of ego. Fast-forward over a decade later, I’m working on a brand new creation of my own, with everything that I learned from the failure and everyone in the industry I’ve had the pleasure of learning from.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My wife and kids are the driving force behind me. I know it might be cliche, but it’s the truth. Parents always tell kids to be leaders and to be themselves, mine were no exception, but being a parent I’ve realized that after awhile kids don’t hear what you say, they watch what you do. So if I want my kids to be themselves unapologetically, they have to learn it from somewhere. I want to be my kids superhero. I want my wife to have the pride that comes with seeing her husband receive accolades or an award from his God given purpose or talent.
