We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taja Rochelle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taja below.
Taja, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I am so grateful for my parents! They taught me and my siblings the beauty and importance of having a strong foundation in God and that all of our gifts come from Him. They taught me to never dim my light and stay true to who I am. My parents were always supportive of my dreams, from elementary choir concerts to talent shows and open mics they were there.
While growing up, music was a constant in my family, and to this day it’s still a place of unity for us. Some of my favorite memories were writing my first song with my dad when I was 7 and practicing for my first church solo in the living room when I was little. What I didn’t see then was how my mom helping me practice the songs over again and how the musical inspiration and jam sessions with dad would mold me to create and sing with such love and intention.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
First, thank you so much CanvasRebel Magazine. My name is Taja Rochelle, I am a singer-songwriter and music therapy major born in Springfield Missouri and raised deep in the heart of Texas with musical inspirations from soul, jazz, gospel, funk and beyond.
I create for people to feel seen and loved which is why I strive to focus on bringing music to different communities seeking a space of peace. Any time I’m blessed with the opportunity to sing in these spaces, even if I’m just singing to the birds (which I do often haha) I’m grateful because music heals. As musicians we get to bring people together through the heart of music and this is why I love sharing the art in different spaces. Music connects us and every chance to bring truth, joy and soul to the community is purposeful.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To just spread God’s peace and allow people to feel loved, heard, and heal through my music/melodies.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Using it to bring comfort. A memory that I will always keep close to my heart was at a shelter that I get to hold music groups at, during the class I could see everyone smiling and singing in the midst of personal challenging circumstances. I saw community. Together we created a safe space where they could close their eyes and just breathe, laugh, and even dance. It’s such a beautiful thing to witness music bring peace and healing, this is what our world needs!
