We were lucky to catch up with Taj Jewett recently and have shared our conversation below.

Taj, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)

The best decision I made was to invest in myself as much as I invest in others. As a creative musician a lot of my time is spent making others happy, making others feel safe and accepted. Though I have the means and skills to do this for others, I began to realize that this was a means I was lacking in myself. I realized this as I began to experience massive drains in my energy the more I gave to people in need. Once I started investing in myself, my craft, and my own self care, I was able to learn how to give and take and recharge in a way that was more sustainable. Once I did this I saw massive improvements in the aount of people I was able to help and in the growth of myself as a musician in general.

Taj, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am the lead vocalist of the Metal band Fused by Defiance. I started in the music industry as a bassist and guitarist playing punk music in a local band. Eventually I grew as a songwriter and musician and took a try at singing and screaming and found out that not only did I love it, I am good at it as well. I am the most proud of our most recent music as I believe it reaches beyond the depth of our normal trajectory.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

Being able to connect to people on a level that is different form simple conversation. Connecting through music is an almost spiritual experience. It connect people through sound and not words, it is a language in itself. Here people can live in a different realm; whereas they may have been misunderstood on the typical level, in music it transends the human experience and aligns those who are meant to be on the same frequency.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

Originally I was a guitarist and a bassist and I had never done anything else. In 2019 I met Fused by Defiance and decided why not take a try at being a vocalist. This was a major shift in my career because I am very much an introvert and do not like excessive amounts of attention, but I took a risk and I’m glad I did because it paid off majorly.
