We recently connected with Tahquetta Hunter and have shared our conversation below.
Tahquetta, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I’ve always had the creativity. I mean always.
I started the business model/idea when I had just moved to Texas after telling God that I would NEVER move to another state.
I had something that I had desired for a long time and used it to focus on family, but focus on that creativity. Time was officially on my side. (September)
By March online school was everything and I had to take a break on the research of starting a digital design business…but I planned. I taught myself how to use lots of features in Adobe Illustrator. Canva became my best friends and I just continued to be all in with design. Continuing to build my own t-shirt business and work in Shopify was still the priority, but I knew that eventually, I want to create logos and develop websites and that’s exactly what I did.
I started Technically Tahquetta Designs when my family and I returned from Texas and so it began right? Wrong, I returned to teaching full-time and continued to work on my t-shirt business all while still having this desire to design.
Am I there yet? Absolutely not, but I’m actually self-employed now with an adjunct professor at a community college coming up in 2024. I think what really happened is that I caught a glimpse of what I wanted life to be like, where I truly had time to think and now that I have even more of it…more of time…more of an opportunity to thrive in what I believe in creatively.
Yes…Moving beyond the idea phase can be one of the slowest, grueling, yet most rewarding phases ever. It’s worth it as you continue to grow in it. It’s difficult. There have been many, “I can’t do this moments, but more I know that I’m supposed to do this and I can moments.”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Tahquetta J. Hunter, an old soul with a creative desire to design. This has come in many forms over my adult like in which I’ve had my own photography business, t-shirt business, and now a digital design business. I help business owners with highlighting their brand so that they can stand out whether it’s through their websites, logo, or social media content.
The thing that sets me apart is the experience and the expertise. For me those two things are one in the same in that my goal is produce results and I’m hell bent about doing it.
I’m most proud of the magazine that I produced for small business women in North Carolina. I had this bright idea to highlight women and share the stories of their businesses in the form of magazine advertising.
I want potential clients to know that I am goal oriented when it comes to them. We discuss what is best needed for you and your business and we move forward for their. I enjoy sending video messages so that clients can see vs. tell them and talk at them.
Here is my elevator pitch that I’ve been working on.

Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses.
Honestly yes. I purchased a t-shirt shop for my daughter that came with 3 t-shirt designs. This was a purchase for her 13th birthday in an attempt to get her to embrace her natural hair and to help make her some money.
The store was purchased through a Shopify expert that builds Shopify stores, just like I do and it was so worth it. She’s not necessarily as interested as I’d like her to be, but I think she appreciated the gift purchase.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think the biggest lesson that I had to unlearn is that friends and family don’t owe you anything. Friends and family don’t necessarily have to be your clients and customers.
Most of my clients are people that I’ve never met in person.
