We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tahnisha Grant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tahnisha , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Is there a historical figure you look up to? Who are they and what lessons or values have you learned from them?
I look up to Madam C. J. Walker as she was one of the first black female millionaires that was self made without the assistance of a man. Her taking a risk on herself gave her an opportunity to flourish in a time when women were dependent on men for survival. Ms. Walkers business venture was so successful she was able to provide employment for her fellow African American women so that they could care for themselves and their families in a legal respectable way.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the industry when I was 17 after being offered a job to be a shampoo girl at a local salon in my city. I specialize in healthy hair care of ethic hair insuring growth and education on haircare to retain length. I’ve been printed in local hair magazines and styled hair for hair shows.
The main issue I believe I address with my clients is HOW IMPORTANT SELF LOVE IS. Caring for your hair is apart of caring for one self. Not just for cosmetic appearance, but for overall “feeling good”. When you look good it can help
you feel good.
What sets me apart is my care for my clients and not cutting corners. I’m only gonna use the best professional products. I’m gonna be on time because I understand just how valuable a perons time is. I’m also gonna give my clients tips on what to use and what to do at home to maintain their hair, no gate keeping here! Education is important as most people absolutely have no clue how to care for their own hair or even the time do to the high
demand of life. I’m also an attentive ear because sometimes you just NEED someone to vent to. I make money from my field but it’s not JUST about the money. It’s about being in a space of
allowing humans to human and not be
a robot going about their day to day
tasks. I provide room to “breath” . I’m very proud of that and anyone looking to be serviced by me can rest in knowing my space is a safe space for them. Tah Does Hair is for the people.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Simply having integrity and drive! Actially LOVING the field! Not just SOELY thinking about the dollar attacted to providing a service. Early on in most fields, the money isn’t that great. You’re either breaking even or in the red, there is no in-between lol. It’s frustrating and it’s not for the faint of heart because doubt will tell you you’re not worthy and to quit many times. Don’t!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
To do things the way I do them and watch out for comparing myself to others that seemed to get success faster than I did. Beating Impostor Syndrome is a must to make it as an entrepreneur. What’s for you is for you and what’s not will fall away. Divine time is always at play and it’s never wrong. Trust whatever higher power you believe, work hard and walk with faith and you’ll get where you’re going.
