We were lucky to catch up with TAHMINA Tofader recently and have shared our conversation below.
TAHMINA , appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My first client was through to the fairs I sat at, and I had put up a stand, it was probably the 4th of July and through them they got my details and started coming to my house. The first fair that I had put my stand up was very welcoming as this was something new and not in my comfort zone as I was also new to the country. However the welcoming I received was very positive and had started to build my clientele

TAHMINA , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The way I got into the industry was through my passion, while I was in Bangladesh I had a passion for henna and Mehndi so I thought it would do great here as the field is not something that many people go in. This reason why this business sets me apart from different people is that I’m bringing my culture into a place where people are quite fond of, and the designs people love are quite intricate that requires work.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
It was a starting from the bottom, I didn’t know many people here and it was hard for me but I still have the resilience that I want to build my platform, I did this through the cards I had at my stand at the fairs I attended and telling people to tell others about me. Whenever others would see the work I had done they would ask and obviously would want to look for my Instagram handle. I would then continue posting different styles I had done and just posting consistently is the key, when starting you would need to post at least 7-8 times a day so people would interact with you more.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I think the most effective strategy for me would be definitely to make sure to give my best service towards my clients. Whenever I am called for bridal henna, I always make sure to give them my undivided attention and make sure that they are comfortable with the design I am doing, therefore with bridal parties there are also many others wanting to get henna done too so they then tell their family and friends from who they got their henna done from which allowed me to grow my clientele.
