Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tahiera Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tahiera, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
In many ways I wish I’d started my career sooner. I was in my late twenties when I began my career. I really started out in film in cable television. At the time it was like a new frontier. I was fresh and I was primed to try new things. There are many things I would have loved to experience and places I would have traveled. I can only imagine my life facing the new horizons that would have come my way. Looking back I would have been more daring. I was a very shy young woman.
Tahiera, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am known as Tahiera Monique Brown I began my film career in Atlanta, Georgia as an Assistant Casting Director, assisting Dee Voigt of Dee’s Casting. I branched off and started my own agency and it was called Talent Xpress. What I discovered was that you need to be able to adjust to change very quickly. When I hold a casting call for a project, I like to encourage talent to understand their craft. Be willing to get training to constantly improve your ability to act. Pay attention to what is expected of you. As for projects that my company, Darkness To Light Films is producing, we do give fresh talent an opportunity. With that said, we look for talent that love the work and be grateful for the opportunity to work with others. We have a crew that take their work seriously. Our Director Bruce Nix is a well rounded individual.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I began my career in Georgia. When I move to Birmingham, Alabama, I had to begin from scratch. I had to renew my business and find others in the film industry. Birmingham, was very new to the film business. I had to realize a new way of doing everything. Because of this new beginning and the challenges I faced, I started my film production company to produce my own films. I began a talk show and hired a crew. Later I began a blog site and a newsletter. Now we’re producing a documentary.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I began this career as a recovering survivor, plus I was caring for a special needs individual. The challenge for me was to be able to stand on my own and have faith that I could persevere. Today, people of special needs are well received in the film industry. Not in my day. I could not openly share what I faced on a day to day basis. Many people that got to know me, stood by my side. My life as a person living with amnesia because I was a survivor had to be hush hush. I learned so much from the individuals I worked with. I learned the film business while working on sets. That’s because Dee Voigt wouldn’t take no for an answer. She encouraged me to face my fears and do my very best. She kept me close as she mentored me. Without her constantly testing my will to be in the business, I don’t know where I would be today,
