We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tabitha Olofsson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tabitha below.
Tabitha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Being Bi-Racial has been a struggle for me my entire life. I moved quite a bit as a child, having to go to predominantly white schools and schools with a mix of people. Because of that, I was made aware of how cruel people can be at a very young age. I saw first hand how other people can make you feel down on yourself. So I had to adapt and change my mindset. Instead of letting their insults and questions knock me down, I decided to be me in it’s entirety ! I will be Beautiful, I will be Intelligent, and I will use it to be powerful in my own right! It IS okay to be both! I designed the concept of Mixed Beauty to show women that you can be comfortable and Beautiful in your apparel without compromising yourself as a person. Beyond that, it’s a movement to empower women to show that our intelligence MIXED with our beauty is powerful. MixedBeauty is ME.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always been an ambitious person for as long as I can remember. Throughout school you always get asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, and my answer was always the same. I wanted to own something, to be the boss, and to impact others in some way. I had no idea what exactly it was that I wanted to own, but I knew whatever it was, it would be MINE. As I dabbled in different Management and HR positions I knew I had an knack for connecting with people and making them feel comfortable enough to see the potential in themselves. Needless to say, I have always wanted to create a Brand that would stand for something. It was important to me from a young age. So I created MixedBeauty but I had no idea what I wanted to do with it. It wasn’t until about 2017 when I decided my first step for the MixedBeauty brand would be clothing. Clothing is how individuals express themselves and I wanted to be apart of women confidently and comfortably showcasing who they are. My ultimate goal for MixedBeauty is to be able to design my own styles. I’m definitely making moves to accomplish that dream but I’m enjoying the learning process this industry is taking me through. It’s hard, don’t get me wrong! But I have learned so much about what it takes to build a brand and much more about what I’m willing put into my own Works. I’m proud of my mission and I can’t wait to show people everything I have still yet to come. MixedBeauty allows me to tap into my creative spirit and roll out products other than just clothing and accessories, which cater mostly to women. We are currently working on our Aroma Therapy Candle collection that will be for both men and women to enjoy. This launch will be coming very soon, and the date will announced on Instagram sometime in the next two weeks.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started and Mixed Beauty in the aspect of clothing, I wanted to be able to design the apparel myself. I really had no idea how much time and money would actually be needed to accomplish what I really wanted to do. So I had to pivot and come up with a new plan to achieve my ultimate goal. I decided I would build up the brand generically first, so that I can work my way up to my own designs..
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
For me, the most effective strategy for gaining clientele has been word of mouth and connecting with people myself. I’m still trying to get good at maneuvering through social media from a business perspective. I have seen some good results with what I’ve done so far, but I can honestly say a majority of my clientele has come from me, interacting with people personally..
