We recently connected with Tabitha Azor and have shared our conversation below.
Tabitha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
In 2021, I was approaching three years of experience in private practice, building my post-licensure hours to officially become a licensed clinician. After passing my exam, I started to feel a strong urge to establish my own practice. Financially, I needed to create a more sustainable future for my family, and part of me had always known that running my own private practice was the next step.
So, I took a leap of faith. I left my position to fully dedicate myself to making my vision a reality. That summer, I immersed myself in learning the ins and outs of business ownership, from legal requirements to creating a therapeutic space that reflected my values. I transitioned into my new practice mid-fall, pouring everything I had into laying a strong foundation. It was challenging, but I was committed to seeing my dream come to life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Tabitha Azor, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and founder of NYC Healing Center, a practice dedicated to helping individuals and couples experience profound transformation and healing. Originally from Haiti, I moved to the U.S. at age 14, a journey that taught me about resilience, adaptation, and the importance of deep connection—principles that now shape my therapeutic approach.
My path to becoming a therapist was inspired by a desire to be a source of support and healing for others, especially during life’s most challenging seasons. In my practice, I blend evidence-based therapeutic techniques with a spiritual perspective grounded in faith, which I’ve found helps many clients feel truly seen, understood, and supported. NYC Healing Center offers a range of services, including individual therapy, intensive couples therapy, and experiential workshops. I’m also developing programs like the Divorce Detox Masterclass, designed to help people heal from the pain of separation and move forward with renewed purpose.
One of my deepest commitments is to reduce the divorce rate in the United States by providing preventative care and relationship support to couples. At NYC Healing Center, we don’t just help couples in crisis; we also work with them proactively to strengthen their relationship foundations. Through programs like our intensive couples therapy sessions, we focus on building communication skills, fostering emotional intimacy, and addressing underlying conflicts before they reach a breaking point. I believe that with the right tools, many relationships can be saved and strengthened, allowing couples to experience a renewed commitment to each other.
I’m particularly proud of the impact our work has had on clients who have faced loss, heartbreak, and challenges in their relationships. My own journey through divorce taught me the importance of rebuilding one’s identity and finding strength on the other side, which allows me to connect authentically with clients in similar situations. Additionally, I’m proud of the positive co-parenting relationship I’ve built with my ex-husband; with our children as the priority, we’ve created a peaceful and supportive dynamic that allows them to flourish.
For anyone interested in our services, I want you to know that healing is a journey, and at NYC Healing Center, we’re here to walk alongside you, providing personalized support that honors your unique story. We’re passionate about equipping individuals and couples with the tools they need to live healthy, connected lives.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Aside from training and knowledge, one of the most important factors for success in private practice is building a supportive professional network. Therapists who own their own practice can often find themselves working in isolation, but developing meaningful partnerships with other mental health professionals is invaluable. Connecting with other therapists offers not only a sense of community but also support and shared learning that’s essential for personal and professional growth.
By building a network of trusted colleagues, we also create a system of referrals, which is critical in providing the best possible care for our clients. Sometimes, a client may need specialized support beyond our own areas of expertise, and being able to refer them to another skilled therapist ensures they receive the most effective treatment. Partnerships can also lead to opportunities for collaboration on events, workshops, or projects that enrich our offerings and provide added value for the community we serve.
Ultimately, a strong network of like-minded professionals contributes not only to individual success but also to a greater collective impact, allowing us to reach and support more people effectively. I already see the power of the tThrough “clinician’s Corner”- a space my colleague and I created for clinicians of faith to find community.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Right now, I’m in the midst of a meaningful shift at NYC Healing Center, expanding our services to include coaching, especially for relationships. This pivot is a response to the growing need I see among clients who, alongside traditional therapy, want practical tools to build stronger, healthier relationships proactively. By adding coaching, I can address relationship challenges before they become crises, offering couples and individuals concrete support to strengthen their connections.
This change requires learning and restructuring as I work to integrate a coaching approach that complements therapy. It’s both challenging and exciting, and I’m already seeing how impactful this can be—supporting clients who want guidance in building relationships that last.
