We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tab Talks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tab Talks below.
Tab Talks, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
We re-tell stories in a culturally competent way when mainstream media gets it wrong. For example, when the Jonestown story first broke, the media was focused on Jim Jones and his ability to get a mass number of people to kill themselves. What was not reported was the majority of the followers were poor African Americans willing to risk it all to leave a country that did not value them. There were also hundreds of children and just as many murdered as there were who committed suicide. There were numerous reports of family members telling our government that people were not being permitted to leave, yet these complaints were ignored because of his political connections. The truth is that nobody really cared about all those black American citizens living in a jungle in another country.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Tab Talks started as an idea to create content during the shelter-in-place mandates of Covid. We started producing non-secular content and then branched out to cover topics with social impact. We received our first award for our work by receiving a Gold Telly Award for our piece “An Examination of the Dream”. This work talked about the literary work of Dr. Martin L. King and how this work and conviction concerning non-violence is relevant today. Our next opportunity came when we were featured on the NOW Network and then Kingdom Purpose TV. We went on to be nominated for Best Talk Show and Best Talk Show Host by the International Christian Film and Music Festival in 2023. From that opportunity we were connected with God’s Miracle Power TV and signed a 2-year deal to be featured on their channel. Our success has been attributed to God first, and by the support of family and friends. Our Youtube channel has just over 6000 viewers and that’s pretty good seeing as a channel is only about 18 months old.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We had to decide early on if we wanted to make money or make great content. We decided making great content was primary and that is our content was great, others would appreciate it and we would eventually make money. I think its important to perfect your craft first. People don’t want to pay for crap, even though crap will get you noticed. We want people to think favorably of our brand and we want to maintain control of our brand and our message.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
We had to learn that not everyone will support your success. We had people who went out of their way to try to limit our reach, but we already had a plan in place to overcome detractors. When we first started streaming our content, we were doing so on the channel of a local church. There was a small, but loud group who did not want content on their channel, even when our content drove more traffic to their channel than their content. We had already anticipated there would be people who lacked the vision to understand what we were doing, so we had already launched out own channel and had already began migrating our content and sharing it with the church. When we parted ways, there was zero impact to our streaming. In fact, our audience grew in leaps and bounds. I believe their channel maybe has a little over 1000 members. We have over 6000 members. So in short, you have to anticipate resistance and always have a back-up plan.
